50000 spectators had come to
El Palacio this cloudy day.
Mario Larnhart was the appointed referee with assistance provided by
Brendon Mareich and
Ioan Pascu.
All of
Ciudad de Buenos Aires was shut down for the day, as fans of both clubs came to the derby.
Banda tactics involved an interesting 3-5-2 combination.
Lineup: Pallaska - Vleugel, Enciso, Besenfelder - Gertzen, Vonzun, Wambre, Luoma, Ceretta - De la Fuente, Carzana.
A 3-5-2 alignment was the formation of choice for Thortons.
They fielded: Stumm - Silva Matias, Condell, Payet - Tesone, Mariconti, Vandeburie, Schopper, Linders - Châtelain, Soetaers.
It seemed as though Banda considered the game won before even taking the field, which resulted in a very uninspired start to the game.
Thortons seemed to prefer attacking in the middle.
Banda took the lead 2 minutes in, as
F. De la Fuente broke through on the left and put the 1 - 0 shot just beyond the reach of the outstretched keeper.
A cross coming in on the right hand side left
J. Payet alone in front of the goal after 8 minutes but his shot was woeful.
Cheers filled the stadium as
S. Gertzen broke through the visitors' central defence to put away the ball to increase the lead to 2 - 0 to Banda.
A bit later, Thortons's
J. Payet easily reduced the lead to 2 - 1 after a misunderstanding in the home side's central defence.
Banda's
N. Wambre got himself booked for a foul.
The home side's
J. Vonzun curled a free kick home after 31 minutes, putting Banda ahead 3 - 1.
The teams went for the halftime break at 3 - 1.
Banda enjoyed most of the ball, as they maintained 64 percent of possession.
The home side's
F. De la Fuente came close to extending the lead 48 minutes into the game. His shot came in from the right hand side but
T. Stumm managed to save it with an unbelievable reaction stop.
Banda's
A. Enciso increased the lead to 4 - 1, after he saw his shot go between the legs of the advancing goalkeeper following some good play down the right wing after 61 minutes.
Banda managed to extend their lead to 5 - 1 when
A. Enciso cut in neatly from the left side and struck a fine shot past the away team's goalkeeper.
After this, you could see that the players of Banda were more interested in killing time than scoring more goals.
Banda's
M. Besenfelder had an excellent opportunity after 65 minutes, shooting after receiving a pass from the right hand side, but he missed the goal by miles!
Good work by the Thortons defensive line after 66 minutes produced a good counterattack chance, which cut elegantly down the middle of the pitch and found
D. Châtelain alone in front of the goal, but his shot whistled just wide.
With 70 minutes played, the Thortons coach decided a substitution may help turn the game around.
M. Melešius came on,
W. Linders had to leave the fray.
The bench was restless, and with 77 minutes passed Thortons's coach gave
M. Ferreira the opportunity the player had been hoping for.
O. Tesone reluctantly left the field.
Banda claimed to have seen most of the ball, and the statistics agreed with them - possession being 64 percent.
Banda's top performer was clearly
D. Carzana.
On the other hand,
K. Pallaska's play was disheartening.
Most important Thortons player was
M. Mariconti.
M. Melešius turned in a dismal performance, however.
The match ends 5 - 1.
