previous 2/10 next 4/10  Rancagua 6 - 2 U.C (391249508)

Fairly good weather for football had drawn a crowd of 35000 to Estadio La Bombonera de Rancagua. Gunter Ward was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Anders Carlsson and Darren Formosa. Rancagua started off with a 3-4-3 lineup. Starters: Martin - Scarzanella, Vittadini, Marcu - Lantz, Feldmann, Chisari, Vaškevičius - Hukka, Alaruusi, Haquenne.

U.C had chosen a strategic 3-5-2 formation. Lineup: Porrini - Caccamo, Trollmann, Titotto - Siegfried, Milroy, Ortúzar, Reinaga, Picollo - Farne, Paulick.

The wings were the focus of most of Rancagua's attacks today. U.C decided to play creatively. Rancagua had a chance to take the lead after S. Haquenne's dazzling drive up the left, but the opportunity fizzled out as his shot went just over the bar after 3 minutes. After 6 minutes, U.C put themselves up 0 - 1, as B. Paulick finished off a strike from the left with a real cannonball of a shot. Due to some great work on the right wing Rancagua's R. Marcu was able to even the score after 21 minutes to make the score 1 - 1. A badly positioned defensive formation on a free kick after 31 minutes led to U.C's B. Paulick giving the visitors the lead 1 - 2. The crowd chanted their encouragement as Rancagua's G. Vittadini came in from the right after 32 minutes and put the ball in the net to level the score at 2 - 2. Rancagua's M. Vaškevičius tried to break through in the middle repeatedly, but couldn't get past the visitors' defenders. 2 - 2 was the halftime score. U.C had most of the ball, with 52 percent of possession.

After some beautiful movement down the left wing, V. Hukka scored for Rancagua putting them ahead 3 - 2, after 71 minutes. Things were deteriorating for the away team as Rancagua scored another to make it 4 - 2 after a left side attack resulted in a goal for P. Chisari after 77 minutes. 81 minutes into the match, the visitors' central line of defence had to look on as S. Haquenne broke through, making the score 5 - 2 for Rancagua. At this point, it was obvious that the players of Rancagua lowered the tempo and became more defensively oriented. Rancagua's S. Haquenne increased the lead to 6 - 2, after he saw his shot go between the legs of the advancing goalkeeper following some good play down the right wing after 85 minutes. Possession in this half belonged to Rancagua, who controlled the ball 54 percent of the time.

The most dominating Rancagua player was without a doubt P. Alaruusi. N. Martin on the other hand, had a terrible day. Most important U.C player was B. Paulick. On the other hand, F. Titotto's play was disheartening. The match ends 6 - 2.
