previous 2/4 next 4/4  Matanzas 0 - 1 Naranjo (391454616)

The weather was pretty good, and a crowd of 12100 had shown up at La PCra for the match. Ivan Božič was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Vladimír Miklas and Alexander Behren. Matanzas had chosen a strategic 5-4-1 formation. The following players had been chosen: Arroyo - Moya, Ceballos, Foulkes, Márquez, Carmona - Picado, Basurto, Loera, Fallas - Campos.

Naranjo tactics involved an interesting 3-5-2 combination. They fielded: Campos - Abreu, Caballero, Coto - Działo, Kędzia, Sanabria, Walraedt, Wappel - Ramallo, Trejos.

Counter-attacking seemed to be the preferred strategy of Matanzas. 18 minutes of the match played, and a comedy of errors by the home side gave the visitors a chance at the lead, but A. Ramallo, after finding himself dashing down on goal from the left with only the keeper to beat, sliced his shot horribly wide. J. Kędzia had a good try after 25 minutes, coming in on a fine move from the left, but the ball went wide. The teams went for the halftime break at 0 - 0. Naranjo claimed to have seen most of the ball, and the statistics agreed with them - possession being 65 percent.

After 58 minutes, Matanzas were awarded a free kick. Rather than shooting straight at goal, the taker went for an indirect variant which seemed to take his team mates a bit by surprise. D. Fallas did attempt a finish, but from an awkward position, sending the ball into the away fans. Naranjo took the lead 77 minutes into the game, making the score 0 - 1 after some elegant movement down the middle. V. Sanabria was the scorer. Unhappy with the result so far in the game, the Matanzas manager used a brief break in play after 77 minutes to give the players new directives. A defender managed to keep the ball from crossing the goal-line after a curling shot coming in from the right from B. Abreu after 80 minutes, and prevented Naranjo from going up another goal. After 81 minutes, the defensive line of Matanzas created a counterattack through the middle that gave E. Basurto a good look at the goal, but his shot glanced harmlessly off the crossbar. Naranjo had most of the ball, with 68 percent of possession.

C. Carmona performed admirably for Matanzas. E. Basurto was a disappointment, however. The most dominating Naranjo player was without a doubt A. Wappel. R. Walraedt turned in a dismal performance, however. The match ends 0 - 1.
