Clear skies welcomed the 23879 spectators who had made their way to
Franja FC Arena.
Leslie Harmsma was the appointed referee with assistance provided by
Shimi Karpel and
Vinko Pečevnik.
Fans of both teams had been eagerly awaiting this
Rio de Janeiro derby and were doing their best to outshout their opponents.
Franja tactics involved an interesting 3-5-2 combination.
Starters: Le Berre - Lewing, Lenzi, Itaberá - Maréchal, Bavastro, Kaduri, Maura, Puelma - Goevaerts, Ladendorf.
Fla-men-go started off with a 3-4-3 lineup.
They fielded: Kiernan - Vraštil, Wuffli, Tepech - Feloaga, Moreno, Maimone, Hicks - Veys, Canêdo, Farias.
Fla-men-go saw most attack opportunities on the wings.
Having been awarded a free kick in an awkward position after 24 minutes, Fla-men-go did not go for a shot but instead fired the ball hard into the 6 yard box. After a brief tussle with his marker,
L. Feloaga was able to power the ball past the keeper to make the score 0 - 1.
F. Veys's speed was almost enough to give Fla-men-go a goal after 27 minutes, but his nice pass to
F. Canêdo was not taken care of properly.
With 36 minutes played, Fla-men-go put themselves up 0 - 2 after an attack from the right, caused by a defensive blunder. The scorer was
J. Wuffli.
It was 0 - 2 at the break.
Fla-men-go had most of the ball, with 54 percent of possession.
F. Veys of Fla-men-go took advantage of a mistake on the home side's right after 48 minutes which increased the away team's lead to 0 - 3.
The players of Fla-men-go now seemed to think the job was done and acted more defensively, just waiting for the ref to blow the final whistle.
Franja had a brilliant opportunity to reply as
J. Maréchal received a high ball from the right, striking the ball in the air. Only
C. Kiernan's reflexes saved him.
Fla-men-go's
B. Hicks made it through the home team's defence on the right hand side 51 minutes into the match. After rounding the keeper, he only had to place the ball in the unguarded goal when a defender slid in and cleared the ball off the line.
Some fine movement on the left led to a Fla-men-go goal after 55 minutes, making it 0 - 4.
M. Moreno was noted down as the scorer.
With 64 minutes played, the Franja coach decided a substitution may help turn the game around.
U. Borges came on,
G. Lewing had to leave the fray.
As the captain was no longer on the pitch,
V. Itaberá took over the role of being the Franja captain.
Franja needed a fresh pair of legs on the field, and after 74 minutes
E. Maura made way for
L. Rimon.
Franja reduced the lead to 1 - 4 with 82 minutes on the clock when
G. Lenzi got the best of a ball floated in from the left.
Fla-men-go's
J. Farias was shown a yellow card after 83 minutes for slicing down an opponent.
L. Le Berre got a fingertip on
F. Canêdo's shot from the left 84 minutes in, and managed to keep the visitors from going up another goal.
Franja claimed to have seen most of the ball, and the statistics agreed with them - possession being 51 percent.
Most important Franja player was
S. Goevaerts.
However,
U. Borges made a disastrous appearance.
Fla-men-go's best player was
F. Canêdo.
On the other hand,
B. Hicks's play was disheartening.
The match ends 1 - 4.
