previous 4/10 next 6/10  Football. 0 - 0 Montevideo (391808941)

A brilliantly sunny day had enticed a crowd of 39433 to El Gran Parque Central. Karel van Schaaijk was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Ralfo Lee and Isaac Paris. Everyone was excited about the upcoming Montevideo derby and the crowd was divided evenly. Football. decided to use a 3-5-2 set up. The following players had been chosen: Moura - Kartal, Silvestri, Kebe - Orbay, Parichehr, Alberzoni, Meneses, Ibrahim - Freixas, Rodo.

Montevideo had chosen a strategic 3-5-2 formation. They fielded: Salaverry - Stipanicic, Gutiérrez, Drexler - Díaz, Dossetti, Filgueiras, Sbrocca, Storm - Ovindo, Marcolini.

Football. demonstrated their creative tactics on the field. Many thought F. Freixas ought to have been awarded a penalty 3 minutes into the game, as he went down trying to dribble around J. Salaverry after a determined run through the middle. Montevideo's G. Storm was shown a yellow card after 9 minutes for slicing down an opponent. Football. were very close to putting themselves one up after 14 minutes as D. Silvestri got through on the left, but failing in concentration, he shot the ball wide. After 25 minutes Montevideo's J. Stipanicic contracted a slight foot injury, but didn't want to leave the game. J. Drexler had a good try after 27 minutes, coming in on a fine move from the left, but the ball went wide. Halftime score was 0 - 0. Football. claimed to have seen most of the ball, and the statistics agreed with them - possession being 56 percent.

Football.'s F. Freixas tried to break through in the middle repeatedly, but couldn't get past the visitors' defenders. After 51 minutes Montevideo tried to exploit their counterattacking skills, unfortunately, R. Gutiérrez's shot sailed wide after his break down the right. Montevideo's J. Drexler could have put the guests one up after 59 minutes after chasing a through ball from the right, but T. Moura was as fast as a snake, grabbing the ball from under his nose. This was a good period for the visitors, with several opportunities to take the lead, particularly when M. Marcolini slipped through the defence on the right to come up alone against T. Moura, but the home side's keeper showed his lightning reflexes. The opposing supporters gave the referee an earful when he only gave A. Ovindo from Montevideo a yellow card after a mistimed challenge from behind 71 minutes into the game. That was far too lenient! Possession in the forty-five minutes was dominated by Football., with 56 percent of the ball.

A. Alberzoni performed admirably for Football.. On the other hand, T. Moura's play was disheartening. Most important Montevideo player was L. Dossetti. J. Stipanicic turned in a dismal performance, however. The match ends 0 - 0.
