Dark skies made the crowd of 18880 at
Laranjeiras a little nervous, but the rain held off.
Dariusz Wyciślik was the appointed referee with assistance provided by
Jill Lahmers and
William Refsnes.
viresi started off with a 3-4-3 lineup.
The following players had been chosen: Mańko - Brandbye, Alexandre, Baštić - Pataki, Kanervala, Galun, Dent - Andersson, Escobar, Toh.
werepyres had chosen a strategic 4-4-2 formation.
They fielded: Mcdermott - Durazo, Mcgee, Proctor, Rivera - Taylor, London, Mcdermott, Larsen - Ainsworth, Knox.
viresi saw most attack opportunities on the wings.
The crowd was amused as
W. Rivera of werepyres used a few interesting tricks and dribbles to get into the penalty box. The finish by
S. Larsen wasn't very amusing, however, as the ball flew way over the crossbar.
T. Escobar gave viresi the lead with a beautiful free kick after 13 minutes. 1 - 0!
viresi put themselves up 2 - 0 when
A. Alexandre broke through on the right, leaving the entire defence trailing in his wake.
The players of viresi now seemed to think the job was done and acted more defensively, just waiting for the ref to blow the final whistle.
After 28 minutes,
T. Escobar put viresi ahead 3 - 0 when he rose to head in a cross from the right wing.
With 34 minutes played, viresi put themselves up 4 - 0 when the visiting defenders lost the ball to
M. Toh, who came up from the left and proceeded to coolly round the keeper and knock the ball home.
viresi increased the lead as
E. Andersson struck to make the score 5 - 0 after an attack from the left left him unmarked in front of the keeper.
5 - 0 was the halftime score.
viresi claimed to have seen most of the ball, and the statistics agreed with them - possession being 76 percent.
W. Rivera received some harsh words from his coach after he acted foolishly 56 minutes into the match, probably out of lack of experience, and almost let an opponent score.
Attacking on the wings was the choice for viresi, and they were successfully passing the ball from the middle to the wings to attack.
A speedy charge from the left side of the field increased the lead of viresi to 6 - 0 as
M. Dent finished it off competently, firing in from an acute angle.
After 71 minutes, the away team failed to deal with a good exchange of passes on the right, and
M. Toh gave the viresi supporters even more to cheer about when he increased the lead to 7 - 0.
The home side's
T. Escobar curled a free kick home after 74 minutes, putting viresi ahead 8 - 0.
That was his third goal of the match - a hat trick for
T. Escobar.
Things were going to get worse for the visitors.
N. Baštić squirmed through their central defence after 75 minutes, increasing the lead to 9 - 0.
With 77 minutes played, viresi's
T. Escobar almost extended the lead, but his shot from the left glanced off the top of the bar to fall behind the net.
viresi had most of the ball, with 83 percent of possession.
viresi's top performer was clearly
T. Escobar.
I. Galun was a disappointment, however.
Most important werepyres player was
J. Mcdermott.
E. Mcdermott turned in a dismal performance, however.
The match ends 9 - 0.
