Weather conditions were fairly good for football, and
Old Smettwurst saw a crowd turnout of 26000.
Till Julius Wellerswist was the appointed referee with assistance provided by
Holger Dapper and
Mirosław Miszczak.
Smettwurst had chosen a strategic 3-5-2 formation.
Lineup: Holzkirchen - Tor, Haque, Fernandes - Poletti, Zitman, Lühmann, Guillou, Konárek - Stenstad, Haniş.
Gladenbach started off with a 4-5-1 lineup.
The following players took the field: Hirn - Barulho, Klieba, McGuinness, Polk - Bentkowski, Güldene, Ionas, Renér, Burgk - Stochniałek.
Gladenbach clearly had decided to counter-attack when they could.
33 minutes into the game,
M. Barulho almost gave the visitors the lead, as he clipped a delicate lob over the keeper, but the ball glanced harmlessly off the crossbar.
Smettwurst's
F. Guillou had to watch the rest of the game from the sidelines, after twisting his ankle with 33 minutes having been played.
J. Rogner-Pollmann was the replacement.
0 - 0 was the halftime score.
Smettwurst claimed to have seen most of the ball, and the statistics agreed with them - possession being 53 percent.
The home crowd breathed a collective sigh of relief when
M. Barulho was unable to put the ball in the net after his show of skill down the left 62 minutes into the match. He was seen beating the pitch in frustration at missing such a good chance to give his team the lead!
Gladenbach almost scored after a counterattack 73 minutes into the match, but
O. Renér took a shot from the left that landed harmlessly in the side of the net.
The referee showed Smettwurst's
L. Fernandes the yellow card after a particularly nasty challenge.
Gladenbach were forced into a substitution as
R. Ionas couldn't continue due to some rough treatment, forcing
W. Girafa to come in off the bench.
At 83 minutes played,
L. Tor came in from the right with the intention of giving Smettwurst the lead, but his rocket of a shot rattled the crossbar.
Z. Halkiewicz was called on to replace Smettwurst's
M. Haniş after 86 minutes following a nasty collision.
With the clock showing 88 minutes played, a great pass from the defensive line of Gladenbach resulted in a counterattack that was smoothly brought under control by
W. Stochniałek in the centre of the opposition's penalty area, but his finish went high.
Smettwurst enjoyed most of the ball, as they maintained 54 percent of possession.
With the scores being level after 90 minutes, the match went into extra time.
There was still no winner after 30 minutes of extra time so the teams had to select a lineup for a penalty shoot-out to settle the result.
Smettwurst's
Z. Halkiewicz didn't look like he was confident as he stepped up, and produced a badly struck penalty - right into the arms of
B. Hirn. The score remained 0 - 0.
Gladenbach's
M. McGuinness was relaxed as he smoothly put the ball in the net. 0 - 1!
Clearly nervous from the start, Smettwurst's
J. Rogner-Pollmann took a long run up, but could only blast the ball over the bar. The score remains 0 - 1.
Oh, the sweet feet of technical
W. Stochniałek... His left one gave Gladenbach a lovely goal. 0 - 2.
Oooh - how unlucky! Smettwurst's
P. Konárek attempt hit the underside of the bar, but rebounded down into the grateful arms of
B. Hirn. The score stays 0 - 2.
Gladenbach's
M. Burgk made no mistake.
B. Holzkirchen didn't have a chance. 0 - 3.
Smettwurst's
L. Fernandes looked like he knew exactly where he wanted to put the ball, but unfortunately his shot went wide of the left hand post. Still 0 - 3.
Gladenbach's
P. Bentkowski looked nervous even as he was putting the ball on the spot. He didn't take much of a run up, and his weak shot was easily saved by the keeper.
Oooh - how unlucky! Smettwurst's
F. Stenstad attempt hit the underside of the bar, but rebounded down into the grateful arms of
B. Hirn. The score stays 0 - 3.
Gladenbach's
M. Barulho penalty shot was very well placed but
B. Holzkirchen went the right way, blocking it spectacularly. The score was still 0 - 3.
Smettwurst's best player was
L. Tor.
J. Rogner-Pollmann turned in a dismal performance, however.
Most important Gladenbach player was
W. Stochniałek.
B. Hirn was a disappointment, however.
The match ends 0 - 3.
