Clear skies welcomed the 47919 spectators who had made their way to ALTAY. Ronald Marcos was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Hayri Gül and Ilpo Ryti. Using their counter-attacking abilities was the strategy of choice for MANAS. After 12 minutes, the defensive line of MANAS created a counterattack through the middle that gave F. Macchini a good look at the goal, but his shot glanced harmlessly off the crossbar. United had to make a substitution after 14 minutes. M. Apenkin limped off the field and was replaced by I. Unterstaller. The opposing supporters gave the referee an earful when he only gave D. Tinistanov from United a yellow card after a mistimed challenge from behind 25 minutes into the game. That was far too lenient! MANAS's counterattacks created a good chance for J. Pascher on the right after 27 minutes, but he could only look on with dismay as his strike rebounded off the crossbar. With 30 minutes gone, a long pass from the defence of MANAS resulted in a counterattack that set J. Pascher free through the middle, but the keeper made a spectacular diving save. 0 - 0 was the halftime score. Possession in this half belonged to United, who controlled the ball 87 percent of the time.

MANAS's defence sent a ball soaring up the middle on a beautiful counterattack with 70 minutes gone, but D. Dyhr's finish was met by the reaching hands of the keeper. After 76 minutes MANAS tried to exploit their counterattacking skills, unfortunately, P. Clauwaerts's shot sailed wide after his break down the right. United claimed to have seen most of the ball, and the statistics agreed with them - possession being 86 percent.

As neither team was able to break the deadlock before the end of regular play, the teams took to the field again for extra time. 106 minutes into the game, M.
