The weather was pretty good, and a crowd of 26128 had shown up at
Arcenio Erico C.A.R. for the match.
Juan Luis Córdoba was the appointed referee with assistance provided by
August Dogan and
Ferenc Pintácsi.
The match took place on neutral ground.
Uruguay had chosen a strategic 3-4-3 formation.
The following players had been chosen: Silveira - Trochón, Shaw, Burátaran - McFly, Reboledo, Roquette, Shek - Gardel, Santander, Valverde.
Perú decided to use a 3-5-2 set up.
They fielded: Zaferson - Espinar, Nolasco, Oropeza - Aponte, Chichizola, Tamayo, Erazo, Nolasco - Muñoz, Fonseca.
Uruguay created a good opportunity to score 2 minutes into the match when
E. Reboledo's hooked ball from the left created a scuffle in front of the goal, and the visitors' defenders had a hard time clearing the ball.
26 minutes had elapsed when a great chance for Uruguay to take the lead after a good cross from the right found
D. Valverde alone with the keeper, but he chipped it to the wrong side of the post.
A well placed corner kick from
L. McFly was followed by
D. Santander's hard but accurate header. The well executed routine resulted in a goal for Uruguay, the score now 1 - 0.
1 - 0 was the halftime score.
Possession in this half belonged to Perú, who controlled the ball 52 percent of the time.
D. Santander wanted to play on, but the Uruguay coach had other ideas, and he was replaced 46 minutes into the game by
R. Estramín.
Perú needed a fresh pair of legs on the field, and after 46 minutes
M. Erazo made way for
R. Bernal.
Uruguay managed to extend their lead to 2 - 0 when
D. Valverde cut in neatly from the left side and struck a fine shot past the away team's goalkeeper.
After this, you could see that the players of Uruguay were more interested in killing time than scoring more goals.
The opposing supporters gave the referee an earful when he only gave
D. Nolasco from Perú a yellow card after a mistimed challenge from behind 72 minutes into the game. That was far too lenient!
E. Reboledo left the field with a smile on his face as he was substituted 80 minutes into the game, as his team was in the lead.
C. Invernizzi was the replacement.
The crowd roared its approval when
S. Silveira somehow managed to block a shot which seemed to be a certain goal by Perú's
P. Espinar 83 minutes into the game.
After 84 minutes, a couple of quick and successful challenges followed by a shot from just outside the penalty area by
R. Estramín might have resulted in another goal for Uruguay. However,
R. Zaferson made a spectacular save.
The visitors got a chance to pulling one back after 87 minutes, due to a defensive blunder leaving
D. Chichizola completely unmarked. His strike was pathetic though, easy prey for the home side's keeper.
Content with how the game was proceeding, the Uruguay coach let
J. Cristiani replace
R. Shaw after 89 minutes.
With 89 minutes played, the Perú coach decided a substitution may help turn the game around.
C. Viudo came on,
C. Oropeza had to leave the fray.
Uruguay had most of the ball, with 52 percent of possession.
R. Estramín performed admirably for Uruguay.
J. Cristiani was a disappointment, however.
The most dominating Perú player was without a doubt
R. Bernal.
On the other hand,
C. Viudo's play was disheartening.
The match ends 2 - 0.
