previous 3/10 next 5/10  Zverys 1 - 3 AZS (393133147)

Weather conditions were fairly good for football, and FC Zverys Arena saw a crowd turnout of 1863. Christoph Hartig was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Lauri Lautela and William Van Haeke. Zverys had chosen a strategic 4-3-3 formation. Starters: Igliukas - Posudnevskis, Lawenda, Butkauskas, Michailovskis - de la Riva, Persson, Højsgaard - Mažiulis, Tarruella, Janavicus.

AZS tactics involved an interesting 3-5-2 combination. They fielded: Vandewaetere - Direnç, Teterman, Krawieczek - Augustyniak, Schaunitzer, Radzewicz, Chwał, Libor - Bibiński, Fritzsch.

After 2 minutes, Zverys were awarded a free kick. Rather than shooting straight at goal, the taker went for an indirect variant which seemed to take his team mates a bit by surprise. G. Mažiulis did attempt a finish, but from an awkward position, sending the ball into the away fans. AZS had several good opportunities to take the lead, especially 9 minutes in when J. Fritzsch came up alone against S. Igliukas who managed a block. Zverys were great at switching from defence to attack, and after 10 minutes, G. Mažiulis swept through the middle on a counterattack, making the score 1 - 0. E. Radzewicz's lack of experience almost gave Zverys a goal after 20 minutes, but the shot went right into the keeper's arms. AZS's S. Augustyniak was shown a yellow card after 21 minutes for slicing down an opponent. AZS tied it all up, 22 minutes in, after a spectacular goal by J. Fritzsch, who miraculously broke through the home side's central defence, making it 1 - 1. AZS's Ö. Direnç gave the visitors a 1 - 2 lead after 25 minutes with a superb strike from the right. 1 - 2 was the score after the first half. Possession in the forty-five minutes was dominated by AZS, with 58 percent of the ball.

57 minutes into the match, the visitors put themselves ahead 1 - 3 as S. Augustyniak finished off an attack from the left with a spectacular scissors kick. At this point, it was obvious that the players of AZS lowered the tempo and became more defensively oriented. The home side worked hard to get through the middle and as a result, had a good chance of getting one back as S. Janavicus tried lifting the ball over keeper M. Vandewaetere. Unfortunately, the ball went just over the bar. P. Bibiński of AZS was booked for kicking the ball away after the whistle. With 77 minutes played, Ö. Direnç nearly put the visitors another one up as he broke through in the middle and fired from just outside the box, but his shot passed just over the bar. The home crowd cheered when, after 82 minutes, G. Schaunitzer's charge up the middle resulted in the keeper making one of his best saves of the day. Possession in this half belonged to AZS, who controlled the ball 60 percent of the time.

Most important Zverys player was J. Tarruella. G. Posudnevskis on the other hand, had a terrible day. G. Schaunitzer performed admirably for AZS. M. Teterman was a disappointment, however. The match ends 1 - 3.
