Clear skies welcomed the 1206 spectators who had made their way to
Das Kapital.
Asmo Kulmala was the appointed referee with assistance provided by
Mugurel Mândrutã and
Rory MacIlrevie.
A 2-5-3 alignment was the formation of choice for Locomotive.
They fielded: Ergil - Miselli, Madrid - Apostolo, Rossi, Gelli, Vester, Carbon - Kylmäniemi, Kościelny, Rinta.
GIRONDINS started off with a 2-5-3 lineup.
Lineup: Nedorost - Bertrand, Ošťádal - Marchand, Neyrat, Roquier, von Buchwaldt, Boschmann - Moinier, Fontaine, Étchegaray.
GIRONDINS used their ability to concentrate their attacks in the middle of the pitch, rather than on the wings.
GIRONDINS took the lead after 9 minutes making the score 0 - 1.
F. Étchegaray placed the ball out of reach for the home side's keeper after a fine move, coming in from the left.
After 10 minutes, a mistake by the home side's left defence allowed
F. Moinier to get through. He outclassed the home side's keeper, adding another goal for the visitors. 0 - 2.
H. Marchand increased the visitors' lead by putting a volley away after a pass from the right. 0 - 3.
A marvellous Locomotive effort on the right-hand side resulted in a goal after 19 minutes by
F. Rinta, making the score 1 - 3.
Locomotive's
R. Apostolo placed the ball right at his teammate's feet after a corner, but
F. Rinta couldn't finish.
With 24 minutes played,
N. Fontaine nearly put the visitors another one up as he broke through in the middle and fired from just outside the box, but his shot passed just over the bar.
The teams went for the halftime break at 1 - 3.
GIRONDINS enjoyed most of the ball, as they maintained 64 percent of possession.
The visitors'
T. von Buchwaldt took advantage of a misunderstanding between the home side's goalie and centre backs 49 minutes into the match. 1 - 4 for GIRONDINS.
By now, the players in GIRONDINS felt that victory was guaranteed and began to play it safe, focusing on defence and not risking too much going forward.
N. Fontaine of GIRONDINS took advantage of a mistake on the home side's right after 51 minutes which increased the away team's lead to 1 - 5.
F. Moinier came close to extending the visitors' lead when he found himself completely unmarked in front of the goal after a pass through the middle. He tried to lift the ball over
G. Ergil but overcooked it and hit the bar instead.
Central attacks were the recipe of the day for GIRONDINS, as they moved the ball from the wings to the middle with startling regularity.
N. Fontaine received a delicate pass through the home side's central defence after 65 minutes, and chipped it past the flailing keeper to score making it 1 - 6. The GIRONDINS fans went wild, whilst the home fans started to think about leaving early.
69 minutes into the match,
F. Neyrat came through the middle and almost added to his team's lead, but the shot went wide.
F. Moinier of GIRONDINS received a yellow card after 72 minutes for unsportsmanlike behaviour.
Locomotive had a brilliant opportunity to reply as
J. Madrid received a high ball from the right, striking the ball in the air. Only
J. Nedorost's reflexes saved him.
Although the whole team were struggling to impress, Locomotive's
G. Ergil was singled out as being the problem as he was called off the pitch after 82 minutes.
E. Sagaria was given a chance to change things around.
The bench was restless, and with 86 minutes passed Locomotive's coach gave
V. Moliterni the opportunity the player had been hoping for.
M. Kylmäniemi reluctantly left the field.
