previous 10/10 next 2/10  Cottesloe 4 - 5 Waverley (393774822)

51300 spectators arrived at Franz Beckenbauer Dome, where weather conditions were pretty good for football. Gabriel Manea was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Rudolf Pollard and Reto Donze. Cottesloe had chosen a strategic 2-5-3 formation. Starters: Caires - Carlerberg, Huťka - Forster, Capuzzo, Bartocci, Johnson, Nardella - McCabe, Bruyn, Muselet.

A 3-5-2 alignment was the formation of choice for Waverley. The following players had been chosen: Clemente - Ketkar, Sossi, Arigon - Betzwieser, Brush, Anh Tuấn, Martin, Dickinson - Kapetanakis, Aranda.

Waverley took the lead after 8 minutes making the score 0 - 1. S. Dickinson placed the ball out of reach for the home side's keeper after a fine move, coming in from the left. With the crowd on their feet chanting wildly, some great moves down the right hand side after 21 minutes gave Cottesloe a wonderful opportunity to level the score, and F. Nardella stepped up to the challenge. 1 - 1 F. Nardella's speed was almost enough to give Cottesloe a goal after 29 minutes, but his nice pass to S. Muselet was not taken care of properly. The referee showed Cottesloe's C. Forster the yellow card after a particularly nasty challenge. Waverley's T. Kapetanakis managed to lose the defenders as he advanced down the right wing and scored, putting the visitors ahead after 35 minutes. 1 - 2. The opposing supporters gave the referee an earful when he only gave S. Johnson from Cottesloe a yellow card after a mistimed challenge from behind 36 minutes into the game. That was far too lenient! The Cottesloe free kick 39 minutes into the match seemed wasted, as the shot was both short and off target. But was this actually a plan? The ball landed at the feet of H. Bruyn, who was completely unmarked in the box. That's 2 - 2! 2 - 2 was the score after the first half. Waverley claimed to have seen most of the ball, and the statistics agreed with them - possession being 53 percent.

Waverley's J. Sossi got himself booked for a foul. Some quick footwork on the left side of the field 61 minutes into the match left Waverley's P. Aranda completely free to score. 2 - 3 for the visitors. S. Martin couldn't do anything to stop the technically gifted L. McCabe as he dodged past on his way to scoring a wonderful goal for Cottesloe - 3 - 3! 3 - 4 was the score with 66 minutes played, after E. Brush cut through the central defence and chipped home a goal for Waverley. With 72 minutes having been played, Cottesloe scored to make it 4 - 4. A dribble down the left wing, followed by a shot which took a wicked bounce off a defender resulted in the keeper having no chance. Everyone thought it'd been an own goal, but H. Bruyn was marked down as the scorer. 73 minutes into the game, J. Arigon almost gave the visitors the lead, as he clipped a delicate lob over the keeper, but the ball glanced harmlessly off the crossbar. As the match clock reached 78 minutes, Cottesloe's organisation began to suffer due to a lack of experience. Waverley enjoyed most of the ball, as they maintained 54 percent of possession.

As neither team had managed to win, extra time was called. Despite his frustration resulting in the smashing of a few teacups, the coach of Cottesloe was able to get his message across, and raised Cottesloe's organisation to solid. D. Carlerberg neatly controlled the ball after a short corner, and knocked it on to S. Johnson who had the whole net open before him, but only managed to hit the post. A mistake by the home side's central defence after 99 minutes allowed P. Aranda to score for Waverley. The scoreboard now read 4 - 5. What a dramatic win for Waverley! Cottesloe's best player was H. Bruyn. D. Huťka on the other hand, had a terrible day. P. Aranda performed admirably for Waverley. F. Betzwieser was a disappointment, however. The match ends 4 - 5.
