Clear skies welcomed the 2006 spectators who had made their way to
Kreuzberg Knicks Arena.
Peter Herbratt was the appointed referee with assistance provided by
Maximilian Rostorp and
Arquímedes Gomez.
Knickerbockers had chosen a strategic 2-5-3 formation.
They fielded: Vitarella - Lonfat, Mendonça - Baeza, Thamerus, Doevendans, Cartés, Petritsch - Pohl, Dinç, Donoso.
Maege tactics involved an interesting 3-5-2 combination.
Lineup: Chabrier - Matsson, Huggler, Romain - Haslauer, Kolev, Eckmann, Capoferri, Widler - Blaine, Ripaud.
Knickerbockers took the lead 5 minutes into the game by 1 - 0, as
V. Donoso elegantly received a long range pass through the middle, finishing off with a half-volley shot just below the bar.
6 minutes into the match
D. Mendonça put Knickerbockers ahead 2 - 0 with a truly marvelous free kick.
By now, the players in Knickerbockers felt that victory was guaranteed and began to play it safe, focusing on defence and not risking too much going forward.
Knickerbockers's
V. Donoso swung in a good chance from the left, but the visitors' defence were able to clear the ball.
After 25 minutes, following yet another great corner,
A. Petritsch's flick on at the near post reached
H. Thamerus, who was just wide with his snapshot - the ball went out for a goal kick.
V. Donoso could have put Knickerbockers up one more, but he fired into the side netting after breaking free on the left after 26 minutes.
With 28 minutes played,
C. Eckmann of Maege fell dramatically just outside the penalty area. However, the referee was unimpressed, and booked him for diving.
2 - 0 was the score after the first half.
Knickerbockers claimed to have seen most of the ball, and the statistics agreed with them - possession being 60 percent.
After 47 minutes, the away team failed to deal with a good exchange of passes on the right, and
S. Baeza gave the Knickerbockers supporters even more to cheer about when he increased the lead to 3 - 0.
R. Widler caught everyone by surprise with a unexpected volley after 72 minutes.
N. Haslauer was perfectly placed to take advantage of the play, but unfortunately, he was as surprised as anyone and couldn't finish for Maege.
The home crowd just couldn't believe it when
D. Mendonça missed a penalty after 74 minutes of the match.
Knickerbockers's
A. Lonfat had to watch the rest of the game from the sidelines, after twisting his ankle with 79 minutes having been played.
S. Wanert was the replacement.
The opposing supporters gave the referee an earful when he only gave
S. Baeza from Knickerbockers a yellow card after a mistimed challenge from behind 86 minutes into the game. That was far too lenient!
The score became 4 - 0 at 87 minutes into the game, when Knickerbockers were given a penalty which
D. Mendonça blasted straight down the middle giving the keeper no chance!
Possession in this half belonged to Knickerbockers, who controlled the ball 61 percent of the time.
The most dominating Knickerbockers player was without a doubt
C. Cartés.
However,
T. Vitarella made a disastrous appearance.
Maege's top performer was clearly
N. Chabrier.
On the other hand,
A. Matsson's play was disheartening.
The match ends 4 - 0.
