Clear skies welcomed the 2812 spectators who had made their way to
Stade Josty Barthel.
David Ølholm was the appointed referee with assistance provided by
Antonio Gerardo Ferretto and
Jan Willy Niklas.
Avenir started off with a 5-3-2 lineup.
The following players had been chosen: Nørbjerg - Mosar, Mathieu, Bøge, Bourreau, Dybdahl - Caubet, Hviid, Hoffmann - Lindby, Wolff.
A 3-5-2 alignment was the formation of choice for Astons.
Starters: Jojić - Larsson, Caramfil, Berclaz - Abacha, Vúlchev, Melisofagos, Kishon, Bonjean - Olsson, Smith.
Avenir immediately set off using their skill at pressing their opponents.
Astons took a creative approach on the field.
After 8 minutes,
E. Hviid came in from the right, feinted, then sped past the off-balance defender to make the score 1 - 0, giving Avenir the lead.
At this time in the match, Avenir were using their skill at pressing to successfully stifle the game.
B. Mosar should probably have put his team up another goal after 17 minutes, but some great goalkeeping by
N. Jojić kept the visitors in the game.
With 29 minutes played, Avenir put themselves up 2 - 0 when the visiting defenders lost the ball to
E. Hviid, who came up from the left and proceeded to coolly round the keeper and knock the ball home.
Avenir's
J. Hoffmann got himself booked for a foul.
N. Larsson behaved like an inexperienced youth player after 37 minutes as he gave the ball away to
J. Hoffmann. Lucky for him though, there was no goal.
With 38 minutes played, Avenir's well-worked indirect free kick caused havoc in the penalty area, and when the ball eventually fell to
J. Hoffmann he gleefully slotted the ball home to make it 3 - 0.
By now, the players in Avenir felt that victory was guaranteed and began to play it safe, focusing on defence and not risking too much going forward.
With 39 minutes of the game having been played,
S. Caubet received a blow to the hip in a collision and was unable to continue. Avenir, with no available replacements, now faced the prospect of finishing the game with a reduced number of players.
As the captain was no longer on the pitch,
R. Wolff took over the role of being the Avenir captain.
It was 3 - 0 at the break.
Avenir claimed to have seen most of the ball, and the statistics agreed with them - possession being 59 percent.
Avenir increased the lead as
C. Dybdahl struck to make the score 4 - 0 after an attack from the left left him unmarked in front of the keeper.
A magnificent combination in the middle resulted in Avenir's
S. Bøge increasing the lead to 5 - 0.
Avenir pressed their opponents, causing the game to be a bit of a stalemate at times.
Given a free kick close to the byline, Avenir tried a move that loyal fans may recognise from training. A pass to the side pulled the defence out of position which let
C. Lindby slip through on goal. He didn't have to break his stride, and slipped the ball past the keeper to make it 6 - 0, 78 minutes into the game.
Having been awarded a free kick in an awkward position after 79 minutes, Avenir did not go for a shot but instead fired the ball hard into the 6 yard box. After a brief tussle with his marker,
S. Bøge was able to power the ball past the keeper to make the score 7 - 0.
The referee showed Astons's
T. Caramfil the yellow card after a particularly nasty challenge.
Avenir fans were dismayed when it was apparent no substitutes remained after
S. Bøge's injury.
Avenir enjoyed most of the ball, as they maintained 56 percent of possession.
Avenir's top performer was clearly
E. Hviid.
On the other hand,
E. Nørbjerg's play was disheartening.
The most dominating Astons player was without a doubt
K. Olsson.
However,
N. Larsson made a disastrous appearance.
The match ends 7 - 0.
