previous 7/10 next 9/10  North 2 - 4 Irishmen (371410993)

12000 spectators had come to Sydney CUP this cloudy day. Janusz Biebrzak was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Dragos Daia and Elie Rougerie. North started off with a 3-5-2 lineup. The following players had been chosen: Feaster - Melato, Koutsoures, De Rosa - Yurretauria, Dupanović, Stadden, Dudea, Chuprov - Marticorena, Bustyński.

Irishmen had chosen a strategic 3-5-2 formation. The following players took the field: Piorun - Zaldierna, Adams, Riddington - Frost, Carbón, Zammit, Sheedy, Chichkin - Currier, Guzmán Hornos.

North showed off their creative tactics. The terraces were silenced after 4 minutes when Irishmen's C. Frost put the guests ahead 0 - 1, following an attack on the right. E. Guzmán Hornos's speed is always a threat when he gets a little room to move, and 26 minutes into the match was no different as he broke free of his man to send a delightful through ball to S. Currier who knocked it in for Irishmen. 0 - 2! The visiting supporters hurled a torrent of abuse at the referee when a questionable free kick after 30 minutes led to a goal for K. Koutsoures, who scored to make it 1 - 2. Due to some great work on the right wing North's M. Marticorena was able to even the score after 41 minutes to make the score 2 - 2. The opposing supporters gave the referee an earful when he only gave R. Zaldierna from Irishmen a yellow card after a mistimed challenge from behind 42 minutes into the game. That was far too lenient! Halftime score was 2 - 2. Irishmen had most of the ball, with 56 percent of possession.

The guests took the lead 85 minutes into the match, after a right-side attack resulted in S. Currier scoring to make it 2 - 3. S. Currier knocked one home from a counterattack down the right wing, making the score 2 - 4 after 88 minutes. This third goal completed a hattrick for S. Currier. Possession in this half belonged to Irishmen, who controlled the ball 54 percent of the time.

M. Dupanović performed admirably for North. J. Feaster was a disappointment, however. Most important Irishmen player was E. Guzmán Hornos. However, W. Adams made a disastrous appearance. The match ends 2 - 4.
