previous 9/10 next 1/10  Mfc 0 - 3 Villains (374465094)

A brilliantly sunny day had enticed a crowd of 31075 to The Riverside Stadium. Alvaro Doncel Luengo was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Antoni Unierzyński and Max Schultz. Mfc had chosen a strategic 5-5-0 formation. The following players had been chosen: Lacerda - Bezin, Aparicio, Czubin, Bruhin, Fimland - Steffensen, Parant, Zubrod, Wiesmann, Ribeiro -.

A 3-4-3 alignment was the formation of choice for Villains. Lineup: Barbisini - Kapuštiar, Perdikoglou, Thénard - Di Fazio, Mancier, Richardson, Michelet - Culianu, Ciscaldi, Vaidilauskas.

Underestimation of the opposition made Villains players perform way below their normal capacity. Counter-attacking seemed to be the preferred strategy of Mfc. Villains mostly ignored the flanks in favour of their ability to attack in the middle. Slack defending gave Mfc a chance to take the lead with 2 minutes played, but P. Steffensen's cross from the left flank was fumbled in front of the goal and easily dealt with by the opposition. With 35 minutes played, the visitors broke through on the right after some poor defending. J. Richardson put the ball away for 0 - 1. The teams went for the halftime break at 0 - 1. Possession in this half belonged to Mfc, who controlled the ball 59 percent of the time.

Villains were in the lead, even though they'd severely underestimated their opponents. The team looked slightly more willing to put in the necessary work as the second half started. 51 minutes into the game, Mfc seemed a little tentative in their play as their organization fell to solid. The referee signalled a penalty 59 minutes into the game following an offence which looked like it was outside the box. A. Perdikoglou knocked it home to make the score 0 - 2. After 80 minutes, Villains's M. Culianu burst through the central defence and let loose a cannonball of a shot, scoring for 0 - 3. At this point, it was obvious that the players of Villains lowered the tempo and became more defensively oriented. Mfc claimed to have seen most of the ball, and the statistics agreed with them - possession being 57 percent.

Most important Mfc player was R. Aparicio. On the other hand, H. Lacerda's play was disheartening. D. Ciscaldi performed admirably for Villains. D. Thénard was a disappointment, however. The match ends 0 - 3.
