MARSJU 5 - 2 Karpaty

The weather was pretty good, and a crowd of 7197 had shown up at Bloody Field for the match. Aaron Marsch was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Joseph Zeitler and Magnus Fal. The head coach flashed hand signals from the sideline and MARSJU formed up in a 3-5-2 combination. Let's hope the opposing sideline wasn't filming that. Lineup: Williams - Cherry, Perriard, Boratyński - Mierzwa, Jäger, Rowan, Finucane, Skøtt - Crookshank, Giles.

Gentlemen prefer blondes and Karpaty prefers a 2-5-3. Let's see how this plays out for them. They fielded: Gruzinskiy - Paulsson, Luka - Drouen, Cihandar, Buksa, Khrennikov, Golopisenko - Fodor, Szałwiński, Żakowiecki.

Today, Karpaty's strategy involved concentrating on the flanks for their attacks, taking advantage of their formidable ability. After 21 minutes of play, the free-spirited B. Skøtt decided to aim straight for the goal as he struck from the corner of the field. The ball deflected off a defender and went out of bounds. N. Rowan gave MARSJU the 1 - 0 lead, as he successfully challenged the guests' central defenders, then placed the ball at the keeper's right post – what a clinical finish! G. Crookshank's well-known speed was on display as he darted past his defender and sent a beautiful pass through the defender’s legs to D. Giles who scored the 2 - 0 goal. At this point, it was obvious that the players of MARSJU lowered the tempo and became more defensively oriented. MARSJU added another goal to their lead as N. Rowan struck home for 3 - 0 after an attack from the left set him up unmarked in front of the keeper. After 38 minutes, Karpaty sent a free kick in high over the penalty box. In what looked like a well-rehearsed move, the ball was headed backwards and reached J. Fodor, who had plenty of time to shoot and score - 3 - 1. The home side's D. Giles came close to extending the lead after 40 minutes. His shot came in from the right but D. Gruzinskiy managed to push it wide with his fingertips. The teams went for the halftime break at 3 - 1. MARSJU were doing a good job holding on to the ball, with 65 percent of possession.

After a play down the right 50 minutes into the match, MARSJU's O. Jäger unleashed a ferocious shot that smashed into the roof of the net - after going over the crossbar. D. Giles had put in a good 70 minutes and left the field with a smile on his face due to his team's lead. P. Lucas was the replacement. After 72 minutes, T. Perriard put MARSJU ahead 4 - 1 when he rose to head in a hooked ball, the result of an effort from the right side. Big paper red cards were being held up by the opposing supporters with 84 minutes on the clock after D. Golopisenko's mistimed tackle from behind. The referee only showed the Karpaty player a yellow card though. 86 minutes into the game, J. Fodor had to leave the field due to a knee injury. In came S. Kriventsov. The suddenness of T. Szałwiński of Karpaty's pass to D. Golopisenko caught the opposition looking the wrong way, and they could only watch as the ball sailed home for 4 - 2. B. Skøtt gave MARSJU supporters even more to cheer about when he increased the lead to 5 - 2 after 88 minutes, following a good exchange of passes on the right that the away team failed to deal with. MARSJU set the tempo, maintaining 65 percent of possession.

Most important MARSJU player was P. Lucas. You can tell it was nickel beer night yesterday at the local bar because A. Boratyński seemed to stumble all over the pitch. Karpaty's best player was S. Kriventsov. Good thing D. Khrennikov isn't a horse, because he'd surely be sent to the glue factory after that performance. The match ends 5 - 2.
