A brilliantly sunny day had enticed a crowd of 12000 to
Stade Municipal.
Johnny Workel was the appointed referee with assistance provided by
Maciej Czerwiński and
Franz Raab.
Diekirch decided to use a 4-4-2 set up.
Starters: Heintz - Julian, Danel, Conrady, Geisel - Metzler, Esch, Berthereau, Meyer - Hieff, Colas.
FightClub tactics involved an interesting 2-5-3 combination.
They fielded: Salemenopoulos - Higareda, Deltsov - Senis, Krog, Elgueta, Markus, Käki - Groschner, Popescu, Tuomisto.
FightClub took a creative approach on the field.
After 21 minutes, FightClub put themselves up 0 - 1, as
D. Groschner finished off a strike from the left with a real cannonball of a shot.
The opposing supporters gave the referee an earful when he only gave
F. Metzler from Diekirch a yellow card after a mistimed challenge from behind 22 minutes into the game. That was far too lenient!
A loud groan was heard from the fans of FightClub, as
V. Tuomisto left the pitch in too much pain to finish the match.
Z. Avelar took his place on the field.
After the ball was lifted in from the left,
Z. Avelar was on his own in the home side's penalty area and should have scored after 25 minutes, but missed, probably due to lack of concentration.
After 29 minutes a combination in the middle resulted in a through ball for
T. Käki who increased FightClub's lead to 0 - 2.
It was a hot and sunny day, and several players seemed worn out. Maybe this was why
D. Groschner found an unusual amount of space for his snappy footwork.
D. Groschner received a delicate pass through the home side's central defence after 33 minutes, and chipped it past the flailing keeper to score making it 0 - 3. The FightClub fans went wild, whilst the home fans started to think about leaving early.
By now, the players in FightClub felt that victory was guaranteed and began to play it safe, focusing on defence and not risking too much going forward.
The teams went for the halftime break at 0 - 3.
FightClub claimed to have seen most of the ball, and the statistics agreed with them - possession being 89 percent.
After 52 minutes, an incisive pass through the middle gave
S. Popescu a chance to increase the lead for FightClub, and he did not disappoint. The score was then 0 - 4.
A well placed corner kick from
B. Deltsov was followed by
C. Higareda's hard but accurate header. The well executed routine resulted in a goal for FightClub, the score now 0 - 5.
Content with how the game was proceeding, the FightClub coach let
T. Benassi replace
C. Higareda after 70 minutes.
B. Deltsov left the field with a smile on his face as he was substituted 70 minutes into the game, as his team was in the lead.
T. McCullum was the replacement.
With 70 minutes played, a quick exchange of passes on the left wing freed
T. McCullum of FightClub to slip through the defence and score another goal for the visitors. That made the score 0 - 6.
After 76 minutes
T. Käki made a speedy advance and dropped the ball to
D. Groschner who shuffled it past the keeper. The score was now 0 - 7.
That made three goals for
D. Groschner and he was marked down for the hat trick.
FightClub increased their lead after 79 minutes when
T. Käki broke through on the right, upping the score to 0 - 8, much to the home crowd's dismay.
After 81 minutes, FightClub's
S. Popescu burst through the central defence and let loose a cannonball of a shot, scoring for 0 - 9.
T. Käki didn't pace himself at all, and after a series of daring offensive runs he was too tired to help out in the defensive play.
After 83 minutes, a mistake by the home side's left defence allowed
T. Käki to get through. He outclassed the home side's keeper, adding another goal for the visitors. 0 - 10.
That was his third goal of the match - a hat trick for
T. Käki.
85 minutes into the match, the visitors put themselves ahead 0 - 11 as
S. Popescu finished off an attack from the left with a spectacular scissors kick.
This third goal completed a hattrick for
S. Popescu.
A. Bonnet was called on to replace Diekirch's
P. Heintz after 86 minutes following a nasty collision.
Possession in the forty-five minutes was dominated by FightClub, with 94 percent of the ball.
The most dominating Diekirch player was without a doubt
F. Geisel.
However,
P. Esch made a disastrous appearance.
FightClub's best player was
D. Groschner.
On the other hand,
T. McCullum's play was disheartening.
The match ends 0 - 11.
