Fairly good weather for football had drawn a crowd of 12000 to F.C Steaua - 1986 Arena. Dámaso Silvestri was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Lois Goekien and Thomas Åhnbo. Steaua started off with a 5-4-1 lineup. Starters: Bedőcs - Vesterskov, Reinders, Tolsa, Bérenguer, Fabris - Valle Pérez, Pettersson, Marjoriebanks, Rozenbergs - Cebesoy.

Eye decided to use a 3-5-2 set up. The following players took the field: Tona - Baratta, Reina, Dyren - Giugliano, Stãnculescu, Pistarà, Huenniger, Lonfernini - Winkelmayr, Nordhagen.

Using their counter-attacking abilities was the strategy of choice for Steaua. Eye used their ability to concentrate their attacks in the middle of the pitch, rather than on the wings. N. Stãnculescu gave the visitors the lead 3 minutes into the match to make it 0 - 1. The goal was scored from the penalty spot after a handball in the penalty area. With the scoreboard showing that 5 minutes had been played, Eye nearly put themselves up another goal after K. Nordhagen came through on the left. Fortunately for the home crowd, the keeper made the save. M. Pettersson of Steaua was booked for kicking the ball away after the whistle. 26 minutes into the game, Eye worked the left side industriously creating several opportunities to add to their lead, but just couldn't apply the finishing touch. 27 minutes into the game Steaua managed a counterattack, but B. Cebesoy took a soft shot from the left flank that was easy prey for the alert keeper. With 36 minutes gone, B. Cebesoy suddenly found himself completely free on the right wing when a counterattack by Steaua caught their opponents by surprise. Only a great save by the opposing keeper prevented him from scoring. 0 - 1 was the score after the first half. Possession in this half belonged to Eye, who controlled the ball 63 percent of the time.

A. Pistarà came close to extending the visitors' lead when he found himself completely unmarked in front of the goal after a pass through the middle. He tried to lift the ball over B. Bedőcs but overcooked it and hit the bar instead. B. Bedőcs got a fingertip on L. Giugliano's shot from the left 54 minutes in, and managed to keep the visitors from going up another goal. On any other day, M. Pettersson's free kick would have found the back of the net to tie the game for Steaua, but not today - the visitors' keeper displayed extraordinary reflexes as he blocked the shot harmlessly to the side. Steaua were close to equalising with a spectacular free kick by M. Pettersson after 77 minutes, but V. Tona made a great save, tipping it to a corner. Eye had most of the ball, with 56 percent of possession.

T. Tolsa performed admirably for Steaua. B. Bedőcs on the other hand, had a terrible day. Most important Eye player was D. Huenniger. K. Nordhagen turned in a dismal performance, however. The match ends 0 - 1.
