previous 3/10 next 5/10  VfB-Biesdorf-Berlin 6 - 0 Gecko (384593347)

Overcast weather free of rain made for a crowd turnout of 14395 at Aschebahn am Grabensprung today. Tenesor Olabarría was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Siem van Dulmen and Tomas Månsson. VfB-Biesdorf-Berlin tactics involved an interesting 4-4-2 combination. The following players took the field: Tranström - González Valle, Boerrigter, Fredriksson, Perry - Elbufer, van Zweden, Hiddenhausen, Elberfeld - Freemann-Kolarik, Bobbert.

Gecko decided to use a 4-4-2 set up. Lineup: Meerwein - Auge, Avar, Garschin, Schevenbarg - Frehn, Brandmaier, Löwis, Patt - Stanke, Fürst von Metternich.

VfB-Biesdorf-Berlin were mostly trying to use their skill at attacking on the flanks. 12 minutes into the game, VfB-Biesdorf-Berlin had difficulty finding their positions and their organisation dropped to inadequate. It was obvious that VfB-Biesdorf-Berlin had instructions to attack on the wings instead of in the middle. After some beautiful movement down the left wing, M. Bobbert scored for VfB-Biesdorf-Berlin putting them ahead 1 - 0, after 23 minutes. 27 minutes into the game, VfB-Biesdorf-Berlin were awarded a penalty that T. Hiddenhausen turned into 2 - 0 without a problem. At this point, it was obvious that the players of VfB-Biesdorf-Berlin lowered the tempo and became more defensively oriented. 30 minutes into the game, VfB-Biesdorf-Berlin seemed a little tentative in their play as their organization fell to inadequate. VfB-Biesdorf-Berlin managed to extend their lead to 3 - 0 when M. Bobbert cut in neatly from the left side and struck a fine shot past the away team's goalkeeper. The VfB-Biesdorf-Berlin free kick 41 minutes into the match seemed wasted, as the shot was both short and off target. But was this actually a plan? The ball landed at the feet of S. Freemann-Kolarik, who was completely unmarked in the box. That's 4 - 0! It might be a while before the fans see VfB-Biesdorf-Berlin's J. Perry again, after he had to leave the field in great distress at the 42 minute mark. He was replaced by J. Alikoski. Halftime score was 4 - 0. VfB-Biesdorf-Berlin had most of the ball, with 78 percent of possession.

The coach gave his players an extra tactical briefing during the break, and after that VfB-Biesdorf-Berlin had solid organisation. A. Elbufer left the field with a smile on his face as he was substituted 46 minutes into the game, as his team was in the lead. F. Bizri was the replacement. The VfB-Biesdorf-Berlin players could smell victory in the air. E. van Zweden wasn't in a hurry to leave the field as he was substituted for U. Suckow after 46 minutes. M. Bobbert could have increased the lead after 58 minutes, but his shot hit the post after a nice combination in the middle of the park. VfB-Biesdorf-Berlin increased the lead as U. Suckow struck to make the score 5 - 0 after an attack from the left left him unmarked in front of the keeper. VfB-Biesdorf-Berlin's S. Boerrigter had an excellent opportunity after 74 minutes, shooting after receiving a pass from the right hand side, but he missed the goal by miles! VfB-Biesdorf-Berlin were determined to attack on the wing and their central attempts were constantly abandoned in favour of the wings. VfB-Biesdorf-Berlin put themselves up 6 - 0 when P. Elberfeld broke through on the right, leaving the entire defence trailing in his wake. Players in VfB-Biesdorf-Berlin heard their coach's words ringing in their ears and steered their central attacks to the wings instead. The home side's S. Freemann-Kolarik came close to extending the lead 77 minutes into the game. His shot came in from the right hand side but M. Meerwein managed to save it with an unbelievable reaction stop. After 83 minutes, there was a bit of a mixup on the field as VfB-Biesdorf-Berlin found themselves out of position and their organisation level dropped to inadequate. VfB-Biesdorf-Berlin enjoyed most of the ball, as they maintained 82 percent of possession.

T. Hiddenhausen performed admirably for VfB-Biesdorf-Berlin. On the other hand, J. Alikoski's play was disheartening. Most important Gecko player was K. Stanke. M. Meerwein turned in a dismal performance, however. The match ends 6 - 0.
