Interview with mawph, Winner of the George Carey Cup
An interview with mawph, manager of The Harbingers, who has just won this season's edition of the George Carey Cup.
You joined Hattrick in April 2004. How did you hear about it?
I can't remember. It was while I was at uni, so probably from a mate there, or similar.
I would pronounce your username as Morph. Did you ever get a picture into Tony Hart's Gallery?
Unfortunately not. You've got the pronunciation correct though.
After being knocked out of the main cup you were parachuted into the George Carey Cup. At that stage did you plan to win it?
I'd always planned to give each game a go. It was only after a couple of rounds I realised that I was amongst the top seeds though. After that, I was pretty determined to get a trophy on the shelf.
In the final you were up against Shipley Rams (555396570). What were your thoughts going into the match?
I thought I could outgun them, but figured that there would be an element of surprise by opting for a 2-5-3 and to be nice and attacking. I also PIC'd the league game beforehand in order to get additional midfield for the final. It was pretty much set up to take the cup and I'd have been gutted had it not come off.
You are currently sitting at the top of III.14. Would you trade your George Carey win for guaranteed promotion to II?
No. I have messed up a couple of times in the league over the last couple of seasons and now sitting outside of top spot too. This was my one chance at getting a cup, even though the challengers cups might not be regarded by some as important as the main cup, so I was hoping to get promotion and win the cup. Looks like just the cup now though.
(Ed. Mawph went on to win the league, but lost the promotion playoff)
The average age of your best players is about 27. Are you still training them and if so in what skills?
I'm training them in playmaking at the moment. I've tried to balance out training with progress during the season, but that's getting harder. The aim is to get my best midfielder (363616950) into the NT in a season or so.
The capacity of your stadium is 58,900, which seems a little small compared to other stadiums at your level. I'm sure you've thought about it, so what mistake have your rivals made?
I could probably expand. I've yo-yo'd around the divisions though, taking every promotion available, so probably have never maximised receipts. I'd probably say that I'm missing out, given that stadium costs aren't that great, so its more likely that I'm making a mistake here.
You have a couple of very good homegrown players in your squad. Is that something that is important to you?
Absolutely. I've trained up players from low to NT levels before and getting training and timings right for the two you've spotted has been great. One has a shot of the NT and even if he doesn't make it, they're both cracking club players who should see me into Div II and maybe beyond.
If your team had a song to run out to, what would it be?
Glad All Over. I'm a big Palace fan. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-hL7ryCy3Y)
What was the last book you read and would you recommend it?
I'm currently reading the Wheel of Time series. I'd definitely recommend them to all and sundry. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wheel_of_Time)
Please tell us about how you met your other half (or last conquest), and how they feel about your Hattrick addiction?
I met my wife in a bar in Reading. She was a friend of a university housemate. I'd describe her as being tolerant and understanding of my habit.
What question should I have asked you that I haven't? (And what would your answer have been?)
What's your Hattrick Ambition: Another national title, or more. Main cup, secondary cup, or prem title, it doesn't matter. I'd just like to get a bit further into the game.
