Irons 6 - 2 markipes

The skies were cloudy, but it wasn't raining. The 27 spectators at Iron Rovers Arena today seemed reasonably pleased, at least with the weather. The boys who got to play today were: Tobin - O'Leary, Hewitt - Murphy, Kennelly, Fox, Granaghan, Cooling - Houstan, Mulcahy, Connolly.

The picks for today were: Pez - Tombesi, Carciofi, Germanò - Zeiss, Scarpa, Ciccione, Prasciolu, Contestabile - Concutelli, De Cecco.

Iron Rovers U19 fielded a 2-5-3 lineup. For marchigianapes, the formation of choice was 3-5-2. Given a free kick in a difficult position after 8 minutes, markipes did not go for a direct shot but instead aimed for the area just in front of the keeper. The attacking players made several runs as the ball was played and made it hard for the defenders to protect their goal. After a short tussle with the defender, Matteo Concutelli could finally lay the ball to rest behind the keeper. 0 - 1, real proof that it can pay off to come prepared. The defenders were clearly outwitted by Irons after 12 minutes. The disciplined free kick combination shifted the ball quickly to one side of the box, then back to the other. Gregory Hewitt appeared on cue near the post, and steered it past the goalie. 1 - 1. The Irons boys gained the lead after 18 minutes of the game: 2 to 1. Campbell Connolly made that look simple with a half-volley shot just below the bar from the centre of the goal area. markipes levelled the score after 23 minutes at 2 - 2, as Domenik Zeiss found himself in the clear down the middle following a nice midfield combination. How nice - that will be a memory for life! Against a lesser team, Irons could very well have succeeded with their smart indirect free kick combination after 25 minutes. A trio of passes took the ball all the way past the defenders, but by then the intended recipient was already blocked off and the keeper could make a leisurely save. It was 2 - 2 at the break. No one team took the initiative in the game, both teams ending up with the same amount of possession.

The hardy few who followed the home team breathed a collective sigh of relief when Alessandro Ciccione stumbled on the ball after his attack from the left in the 79:th minute. This eliminated his chance to give the visitors the go-ahead goal. Irons grabbed the initiative after 82 minutes, as Todd Houstan cut in from the right and, with some luck, shoved the ball in for 3 - 2. The markipes coach was desperate to reverse his team's fortunes in the game, and ordered his team to change strategy. Unhappy with the result so far in the game, the markipes manager used a brief break in the 82:th minute to give the players new directives. Irons's Owen Granaghan showed some of his reported potential with that goal. It's 4 - 2, a clinical finish after a pass through the middle that impressed even some of the senior squad players that showed up here today. To impress some local girls at the side of pitch Floriano De Cecco did some fancy moves up the middle and nearly reduced the home side's lead, but Joseph Tobin refused to let the ball slip by him. The 5 - 2 goal was scored by Colin Murphy 85 minutes into the match, following an enthusiastic counterattack down the middle by Irons. Jamie Fox's quick little feet overtook Gabriele Tombesi and suddenly Irons had a golden opportunity to score! Said and done: 6 - 2. As the match wraps up the score is 6 - 2. This part of the game was a standoff between the teams.

The spectators agreed that the most impressive boy in Irons today had been Todd Houstan. Joseph Tobin left the field with tears in his eyes, knowing he had been the worst player on his team. markipes's Matteo Concutelli had a great game and was congratulated by his team mates. This lad could be going places! The coach took Zaccaria Pez aside after the game, telling him it is okay to have a bad day on the pitch as long as you keep trying.
