Southern 3 - 4 ESW

1979 spectators had come to Arena of Southern Dreams this cloudy day. was the appointed referee with assistance provided by and . Southern tactics involved an interesting 4-5-1 combination. The following players had been chosen: Abreu - Lind, van Strijen, Sijes, van Hilst - Kamphuis, Chavin, van Helmond, Munniksma, de Ridder - Grootjans.

A 5-5-0 alignment was the formation of choice for ESW. Starters: Steri - Ex, Ex, Teffer, Clarisse, Wolvensberg - van der Togt, Schneidewind, Peszeni, Serin, Witteveen -.

Southern used their inadequate skill at pressing to cut off the attack angles of their opponents all over the field. It was obvious that ESW were using their inadequate pressing skill as their primary tactic. Southern's ability to press all over the field frequently paid dividends. ESW's talent at pressing frustrated the spectators as the game became a dire midfield struggle. The pressing tactics used by Southern were successful as the ball remained close to the half way line at all times. The opposing supporters gave the referee an earful when he only gave Lennaert van der Togt from ESW a yellow card after a mistimed challenge from behind 35 minutes into the game. That was far too lenient! As Lambertus Ex had, completely unprovoked, swept the legs out from under an opponent in front of a linesman, the referee gave the ESW player a red card without batting an eyelid. Halftime score was 0 - 0. Southern claimed to have seen most of the ball, and the statistics agreed with them - possession being 53 percent.

Southern fans held their breath as Bas Jan van Helmond scampered down the left side. He successfully avoided all challenges and cracked home the shot for 1 - 0! Leo van Strijen always provides an aerial threat at corners, and with 80 minutes gone, he demonstrated this, outjumping his marker, then letting out an anguished howl as his powerful header went narrowly wide. A well placed corner kick from Elbruz Serin was followed by Kristiaan Ex's hard but accurate header. The well executed routine resulted in a goal for ESW, the score now 1 - 1. As the 89 minute mark approached, the Southern coach decided it was time for a substitution. Else Munniksma reluctantly made way for Brandon Jacobs on the pitch. Silvano Chavin would have preferred to play on, but his coach decided otherwise. Robert Dittrich entered the game for Southern as the match clock showed 89 minutes. 89 minutes into the game, Southern wanted to bring some new energy to their game. Bas Jan van Helmond gave Helmut Dirven a quick hug as he left the field. Piero Steri got new instructions from the ESW coach after 89 minutes. He changed positions with Guido Clarisse soon after. After 89 minutes, the ESW coach made a sign to Lennaert van der Togt, who soon changed positions with Kristiaan Ex. As the clock reached 89 minutes, ESW decided to regroup. Arnold Peszeni gave Ernst Teffer a little pat on the back as they changed positions on the pitch. After 89 minutes, the ESW coach wanted to see a new face on the pitch, waving Leendert-Jan Wolvensberg off the field. Ted Schenkhuizen took his place. Possession in the forty-five minutes was dominated by Southern, with 71 percent of the ball.

As neither team was able to break the deadlock before the end of regular play, the teams took to the field again for extra time. The Southern coach adjusted their lineup with 91 minutes gone. Hein Sijes and Fritz Kamphuis assumed each other's positions. After 91 minutes, the Southern manager redeployed his men. Folkert de Ridder swapped positions with Edwin van Hilst. At this time in the match, Southern were using their skill at pressing to successfully stifle the game. ESW's Driekus Witteveen left the field after 116 minutes because of a nasty blow to the shin. His replacement was Bogdan Świerkowski. The result was still a draw, so the match had to be settled with penalties.

Southern's Erben Grootjans looked like he knew exactly where he wanted to put the ball, but unfortunately his shot went wide of the left hand post. Still 1 - 1. Oh, the sweet feet of technical Elbruz Serin... His left one gave ESW a lovely goal. 1 - 2. Clearly nervous from the start, Southern's Fritz Kamphuis took a long run up, but could only blast the ball over the bar. The score remains 1 - 2. ESW's Guido Clarisse showed he has nerves of steel when it comes to penalties, easily changing the score to 1 - 3. There aren't many players that have the cheek to take a penalty like that! Southern's Folkert de Ridder showed he was one of them, as he made it 2 - 3. A confident Helmi Schneidewind of ESW put the ball right where he wanted, but Caio Abreu was right there for the save. No goal. A badly laid penalty by Southern's Caio Abreu was surrendered by Guido Clarisse, who took an equally bad dive, making the score 3 - 3. ESW's Piero Steri cockily booted the ball with a short-and-fast instep. The penalty, going just wide of the mark, didn't produce a goal. Southern's Leo van Strijen didn't look like he was confident as he stepped up, and produced a badly struck penalty - right into the arms of Guido Clarisse. The score remained 3 - 3. ESW's Ernst Teffer looked nervous even as he was putting the ball on the spot. He didn't take much of a run up, and his weak shot was easily saved by the keeper. Southern's Edwin van Hilst didn't hesitate but Guido Clarisse managed the save, resulting in an unchanged 3 - 3 score. Oooh - how unlucky! ESW's Ted Schenkhuizen attempt hit the underside of the bar, but rebounded down into the grateful arms of Caio Abreu. The score stays 3 - 3. Clearly nervous from the start, Southern's Hein Sijes took a long run up, but could only blast the ball over the bar. The score remains 3 - 3. ESW's Kristiaan Ex didn't look like he was confident as he stepped up, and produced a badly struck penalty - right into the arms of Caio Abreu. The score remained 3 - 3. Southern's Mikael Lind drove the ball hard to the corner but couldn't get it past the outstretched arm of Guido Clarisse. The score remains 3 - 3. ESW's Bogdan Świerkowski didn't look like he was confident as he stepped up, and produced a badly struck penalty - right into the arms of Caio Abreu. The score remained 3 - 3. Southern's Robert Dittrich looked nervous even as he was putting the ball on the spot. He didn't take much of a run up, and his weak shot was easily saved by the keeper. ESW's Lennaert van der Togt penalty shot was very well placed but Caio Abreu went the right way, blocking it spectacularly. The score was still 3 - 3. Southern's Brandon Jacobs looked nervous even as he was putting the ball on the spot. He didn't take much of a run up, and his weak shot was easily saved by the keeper. ESW's Arnold Peszeni was relaxed as he smoothly put the ball in the net. 3 - 4! Robert Dittrich performed admirably for Southern. Mikael Lind was a disappointment, however. ESW's best player was Guido Clarisse. However, Piero Steri made a disastrous appearance. The match ends 3 - 4.
