Norge 2 - 2 Hrvatska

It was an exceptionally sunny day for the crowd of 109414 that came out to Bilstad Arena. Jon Johannesen was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Michał Skuciński and Roger Chapon. Gentlemen prefer blondes and Norge prefers a 3-5-2. Let's see how this plays out for them. The following players had been selected: Andersen - Westerheim, Log, Midtlyng - Strand, Mortensholm, Liseth, Anderson, Sørum - Aarstad, Mork.

Our studio analysts were correct. Hrvatska has taken the field in a 5-3-2 alignment. Starters: Babarogić - Danilović, Bartulović, Jarni, Prvulović, Delavia - Séra, Tanasijević, Pulja - Strpić, Mujagić.

Norge were mostly trying to use their utopian skill at attacking on the flanks. Like the adage "bend but don't break", Hrvatska will rely on their magical ability to counter-attack today. It was obvious that Norge had instructions to attack on the wings instead of in the middle. Norge had a good opportunity to take the lead as P. Liseth came up the left side, but he struck the ball weakly and it went straight into the arms of D. Babarogić. Big paper red cards were being held up by the opposing supporters with 14 minutes on the clock after E. Strpić's mistimed tackle from behind. The referee only showed the Hrvatska player a yellow card though. Norge were determined to attack down the sideline and their central attempts were constantly abandoned in favor of the wings. After 16 minutes, the defensive line of Hrvatska created a counter-attack through the middle that gave H. Mujagić a good look at goal, but his shot glanced harmlessly off the crossbar. The home side put themselves ahead 1 - 0 after 23 minutes of hard work with a breakthrough from E. Westerheim, who, all by his lonesome, came out of the right wing and hooked the ball over the visitors' keeper. A beautiful, arcing corner kick from E. Westerheim found H. Mortensholm at the far post, soaring to meet the ball. The keeper is late and he's headed it in for 2 - 0! By now, the players of Norge felt that victory was a sure thing and began to play it safe, focusing on defense and not risking too much going forward. R. Aarstad's technique was perfect on this sunny day and led to some beautiful tricks that fooled the defense. Halftime score was 2 - 0. Looks like Nate Silver was right again - his prediction that Norge would have 70 percent possession in this half was spot on!

A great save by keeper D. Babarogić with 47 minutes gone kept the visitors in the game after K. Sørum struck from the left with a real cannonball. P. Liseth had put in a good 69 minutes and left the field with a smile on his face due to his team's lead. T. Syvertsen was the replacement. Hrvatska needed a fresh pair of legs on the field, and after 70 minutes D. Séra made way for B. Jakušić. Norge's K. Sørum wanted to play on, but after 74 minutes the decision was made to give P. Hojem a chance in his place. After a play down the right 82 minutes into the match, Norge's J. Anderson unleashed a ferocious shot that smashed into the roof of the net - after going over the crossbar. A penalty 83 minutes into the game gave the home side a chance at adding to the score, but an overconfident E. Westerheim shot the ball wide trying to put it away in the top corner. Hrvatska hit back on the counter-attack 84 minutes into the game and drew a free kick. Initially it seemed wasted, hit wide towards the wing. But there was an idea to it - the ball was then crossed towards H. Mujagić, who was waiting for it in the box. That's 2 - 1! Don't forget to thank the dead ball coach for that idea! Hrvatska were great at switching from defense to attack, and after 86 minutes, R. Delavia swept through the middle on a fantastic counter-attack, making the score 2 - 2. The coach of Norge wanted to try to mix things up after 86 minutes, and gave new tactical instructions. After 87 minutes, the Norge coach wanted to see a new face on the field, waving O. Log off. B. Stjärnhall took his place. Feeling like a boy about to meet his girlfriend's father for the first time, the inexperienced Hrvatska struggled to maintain their level of play after 88 minutes. After more pushing and shoving than a pack of helicopter moms trying to get the last appointment for their snowflakes to see the Easter Bunny, Norge's R. Aarstad finally got himself booked for a foul. E. Strpić wasn't much help defensively. His energy-consuming forward runs proved quite costly in the oppressive heat. With 89 minutes gone, E. Strpić suddenly found himself completely free on the right wing when a counter-attack by Hrvatska caught their opponents by surprise. Only a great save by the opposing keeper prevented him from scoring. Norge did a good job holding on to the ball, with 72 percent of possession.

Norge's top performer was clearly H. Mork. Good thing P. Hojem isn't a horse, because he'd surely be sent to the glue factory after that performance. The most outstanding Hrvatska player was without a doubt H. Mujagić. Speaking of stinking up the place, B. Jarni sure smelled like the bottom of Batman's shoe after a night of crimefighting in Gotham. The match ends 2 - 2.
