Norge 2 - 2 Hrvatska

It was an exceptionally sunny day for the crowd of 109414 that came out to Bilstad Arena. Jon Johannesen was the appointed referee with assistance provided by and . A 3-5-2 alignment was the formation of choice for Norge. The following players had been chosen: Andersen - Westerheim, Log, Midtlyng - Strand, Mortensholm, Liseth, Anderson, Sørum - Aarstad, Mork.

Hrvatska started off with a 5-3-2 lineup. Starters: Babarogić - Danilović, Bartulović, Jarni, Prvulović, Delavia - Séra, Tanasijević, Pulja - Strpić, Mujagić.

Norge were mostly trying to use their utopian skill at attacking on the flanks. Hrvatska were relying on their magical ability to counter-attack. It was obvious that Norge had instructions to attack on the wings instead of in the middle. Norge had a good opportunity to take the lead as Per Liseth came up the left side, but he struck the ball weakly and it went straight into the arms of Danilo Babarogić. The opposing supporters gave the referee an earful when he only gave Eduard Strpić from Hrvatska a yellow card after a mistimed challenge from behind 14 minutes into the game. That was far too lenient! Norge were determined to attack on the wing and their central attempts were constantly abandoned in favour of the wings. After 16 minutes, the defensive line of Hrvatska created a counterattack through the middle that gave Hrvoje Mujagić a good look at the goal, but his shot glanced harmlessly off the crossbar. The home side put themselves ahead 1 - 0 after 23 minutes courtesy of a breakthrough from Espen Westerheim, who scored with a stunning volley following a cross from the right wing. The corner kick from Espen Westerheim was powerfully met by the head of Helge Mortensholm to make the score 2 - 0. By now, the players in Norge felt that victory was guaranteed and began to play it safe, focusing on defence and not risking too much going forward. Rolf Aarstad's technique was perfect on this sunny day and led to some breathtaking tricks that bamboozled the defence. Halftime score was 2 - 0. Possession in this half belonged to Norge, who controlled the ball 70 percent of the time.

A great save by keeper Danilo Babarogić after 47 minutes kept the visitors in the game after Kjartan 'Jojo' Sørum struck from the left with a real cannonball. Per Liseth left the field with a smile on his face as he was substituted 69 minutes into the game, as his team was in the lead. Trygve Syvertsen was the replacement. Hrvatska needed a fresh pair of legs on the field, and after 70 minutes Dominik Séra made way for Blaž Jakušić. Kjartan 'Jojo' Sørum wanted to play on, but the Norge coach had other ideas, and he was replaced 74 minutes into the game by Per-Arne Hojem. Norge put in a good effort on the right, but Jørn Anderson saw his volley fly wide of the mark 82 minutes into the game. A penalty 83 minutes into the game gave the home side a chance at adding to the score, but an overconfident Espen Westerheim shot the ball wide trying to put it away in the top corner. Hrvatska hit back on the counter attack 84 minutes into the game with a free kick. Initially it seemed wasted, hit wide towards the wing. But there was an idea to it - the ball was then crossed towards Hrvoje Mujagić, who was waiting for it in the box. That's 2 - 1! Don't forget to thank the set pieces coach for that idea! Hrvatska were great at switching from defence to attack, and after 86 minutes, Romano Delavia swept through the middle on a counterattack, making the score 2 - 2. The coach of Norge wanted to try to change things around after 86 minutes, and gave new tactical instructions. After 87 minutes, the Norge coach wanted to see a new face on the pitch, waving Ottar Log off the field. Björn 'Auge' Stjärnhall took his place. Under heavy pressure after 88 minutes, the inexperienced Hrvatska struggled to maintain their level of play. Norge's Rolf Aarstad got himself booked for a foul. Eduard Strpić wasn't much help defensively. His energy-consuming forward runs proved quite costly in the oppressive heat. With 89 minutes gone, Eduard Strpić suddenly found himself completely free on the right wing when a counterattack by Hrvatska caught their opponents by surprise. Only a great save by the opposing keeper prevented him from scoring. Norge had most of the ball, with 72 percent of possession.

Norge's top performer was clearly Henning Mork. However, Per-Arne Hojem made a disastrous appearance. The most dominating Hrvatska player was without a doubt Hrvoje Mujagić. Bogdan Jarni was a disappointment, however. The match ends 2 - 2.
