Cymru 1 - 1 Bulgaria

Overcast weather free of rain made for a crowd turnout of 34541 at Montenegro Arena today. Koby Sahar was the appointed referee with assistance provided by and Médéric Boisard. The match took place on neutral ground. Cymru decided to use a 5-2-3 set up. The following players had been chosen: Ngulube - Howe, Gray, McParland, Summers, Kyffin - Williams, Sinnott - Chave, Neal-Sturgess, Cartwright.

Bulgaria started off with a 3-5-2 lineup. The following players took the field: Arabov - Tomov, Dafov, Tzekov - Tevs, Stoilkov, Asparuhov, Kostov, Dimovski - Krústev, Daskalov.

Counter-attacking seemed to be the preferred strategy of Cymru, taking advantage of their utopian level with that tactic. Dimitar Kostov was ever so close to scoring after an excellent corner was beautifully flicked on by Kamuran Tevs, but the ball bounced off the post to safety. After 40 minutes, Bulgaria put themselves up 0 - 1, as Kamuran Tevs finished off a strike from the left with a real cannonball of a shot. Bulgaria's Vladimir Stoilkov was shown a yellow card after 42 minutes for slicing down an opponent. Dimitar Kostov of Bulgaria was booked for kicking the ball away after the whistle. Charles Chave showed why he is feared on the counterattack, breaking through in the middle and scoring for Cymru after 44 minutes to make the score 1 - 1. 1 - 1 was the score after the first half. Possession in this half belonged to Bulgaria, who controlled the ball 80 percent of the time.

54 minutes into the game, Dimitar Kostov was a hair's breadth away from giving Bulgaria the lead with a shot from over on the left. A prompt block by Marc Ngulube saved the home team that time. 55 minutes into the game, Bulgaria wanted to bring some new energy to their game. Kiril Dafov gave Atanas Taslakov a quick hug as he left the field. As the 55 minute mark approached, the Bulgaria coach decided it was time for a substitution. Dimitar Kostov reluctantly made way for Stefan Apostolov on the pitch. 55 minutes into the match, the Bulgaria manager wanted to try a new tactic, and the players loyally obliged. Priding himself in being an active coach, the Bulgaria manager gave new instructions to his players after 55 minutes. With 62 minutes gone, Charles Chave suddenly found himself completely free on the right wing when a counterattack by Cymru caught their opponents by surprise. Only a great save by the opposing keeper prevented him from scoring. The visitors were very close to gaining the lead with a marvellous free kick after 63 minutes, but Marc Ngulube made a beautiful one-handed save. Peter McParland would have preferred to play on, but his coach decided otherwise. Stew Clarke entered the game for Cymru as the match clock showed 70 minutes. 70 minutes into the match, the referee signalled for a Cymru substitution. Anthony Vaughan came on for Paul Sinnott. With the scoreboard clock showing 74 minutes, the inexperienced Bulgaria team fell into disarray. Cymru mounted an inspired counterattack down the right wing after 79 minutes, but Charles Chave was unable to convert from short range. After 80 minutes, the Cymru coach wanted to see a new face on the pitch, waving Marc Ngulube off the field. John Swabey took his place. Possession in the forty-five minutes was dominated by Bulgaria, with 77 percent of the ball.

Christopher Kyffin performed admirably for Cymru. On the other hand, Stew Clarke's play was disheartening. The most dominating Bulgaria player was without a doubt Atanas Taslakov. Stefan Apostolov turned in a dismal performance, however. The match ends 1 - 1.
