Due to an all-day shower, 12000 paying spectators got to see a match on a pitch-turned-bog at Dragon Park. Włodzimierz Gęsior was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Alfred Lletjós and Jan Sapielak. For strong, physical players the heavy rain was easy to overcome, it was even an advantage given their style of play. Others, such as the quick or technical ones, made bleaker appearances. They fielded: Wahla - ó Dubhuir, Pittelman, Hicks, Joule - Tan, North, Horsfall, Skivington - Kendon, Darcy.

The following players had been chosen: Looney - Muhammad, Baber, Mclean, Brown - Soley, Hann, Spencer, Siggins - Ashern, Sheppard.

As the teams prepared to start the match, they both lined up in a 4-4-2 formation. With 19 minutes gone, Athletic had a free kick in a decent position. Despite this being a great chance for a shot, they tried a cheeky move intended to bypass the defence. However, Alfred Hicks did not manage to connect with it cleanly and the ball went out. 0 - 0 was the halftime score. Possession in the forty-five minutes was dominated by Athletic, with 59 percent of the ball.

Athletic took the lead, 1 - 0, after a penalty 71 minutes into the match. John Tan scored from the penalty spot. Athletic's Milo ó Dubhuir was shown a yellow card for standing over the ball and blocking an opponent's quick free kick after 72 minutes. The visitors almost came back with an equaliser 77 minutes into the match after a good combination through the middle, but when Robert Sheppard tried to finish the attack, he couldn't get enough power on the shot to seriously challenge the keeper. The match ends 1 - 0. Athletic enjoyed most of the ball, as they maintained 57 percent of possession.

Athletic's top performer was clearly Tommy Pittelman. However, Phil Kendon made a disastrous appearance. Robert Sheppard performed admirably for Phoenix. John Looney turned in a dismal performance, however.
