Portland 0 - 10 Dale

Weather conditions were fairly good for football, and Providence Park saw a crowd turnout of 12000. Miguel Torres was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Edmondo Meroni and Luuri Lüdimõis. Lineup: Wedderburn - Amjad, Tam, Gibbs, Innes - Glennane, John, Young, Greaves - Paltrow, Escobar.

The following players had been chosen: Zahren - Agrawal, de Bruine - Geisler, Shevkov, Amaireh, Schragner - Maggio, Boglione.

The teams had chosen different formations for the match. Home team Portland Thorns went for 4-4-2 while Rochdale United has decided to play a 2-4-2 lineup. Dale displayed their world class ability to play creatively. 3 minutes into the match, Dale's Borislav Shevkov popped up from nowhere, cheekily stole the ball off an opposition player and scored. 0 - 1. The visitors' Cristoforo 'Super' Maggio took advantage of a misunderstanding between the home side's goalie and centre backs 12 minutes into the match. 0 - 2 for Dale. Having contracted a nasty injury to his left foot, Derek Innes had no choice but to leave the pitch, 18 minutes into the match. The player that took his place was Alvin Shakeshaft. Some fine movement on the left led to a Dale goal after 27 minutes, making it 0 - 3. Alberto Boglione was noted down as the scorer. Archibald Gibbs challenged the visitors' central defence eagerly, producing a good chance 29 minutes into the game as he went for a through ball. But, as so many times before, the guests' defensive efforts got the best of it. After 30 minutes, Dale sent a free kick in high over the penalty box. In what looked like a well-rehearsed move, the ball was headed backwards and reached Cristoforo 'Super' Maggio, who had plenty of space to place a well aimed shot - 0 - 4. 35 minutes in, Dale appeared unsure on how to play and their organisation was only weak. Cristoforo 'Super' Maggio could have put his team up another goal 37 minutes into the game, after a rush down the left, but his closing shot hit the post. Cristoforo 'Super' Maggio of Dale received a yellow card after 43 minutes for unsportsmanlike behaviour. The Dale free kick 43 minutes into the match seemed wasted, as the shot was both short and off target. But was this actually a plan? The ball landed at the feet of Poul Geisler, who was completely unmarked in the box. That's 0 - 5! Dale increased their lead after 43 minutes when Alberto Boglione broke through on the right, upping the score to 0 - 6, much to the home crowd's dismay. 0 - 6 was the score after the first half. Possession in the forty-five minutes was dominated by Dale, with 69 percent of the ball.

During the break, Dale's coach went through the team's tactics yet again, getting them up to solid organisation. 63 minutes into the game, Dale had difficulty finding their positions and their organisation dropped to passable. Cristoforo 'Super' Maggio increased the visitors' lead by putting a volley away after a pass from the right. 0 - 7. By then Cristoforo 'Super' Maggio had scored three goals - a hat trick! 72 minutes into the match, a typically brave header by Sven Schragner from Poul Geisler's cross looped just over the opposing goalkeeper's desperate reach. Goal for Dale, making the score 0 - 8. With the scoreboard showing that 73 minutes had been played, Dale nearly put themselves up another goal after Cristoforo 'Super' Maggio came through on the left. Fortunately for the home crowd, the keeper made the save. Dale's Cristoforo 'Super' Maggio blocked one attack after another by Portland, finally picking the ball up for himself and powering through towards the goal. It paid off! 0-9 after 73 minutes. With 79 minutes played, Dale put themselves up 0 - 10 after an attack from the right, caused by a defensive blunder. The scorer was Cristoforo 'Super' Maggio. 80 minutes into the game, Dale seemed a little tentative in their play as their organization fell to weak. The referee decided to let play continue for an additional 4 minutes beyond the regular 90 minutes. The match ends 0 - 10. Dale had most of the ball, with 67 percent of possession.

The most dominating Portland player was without a doubt David Paltrow. Kristofer Wedderburn turned in a dismal performance, however. Most important Dale player was Alberto Boglione. However, Sean 'Sharpshooter' Zahren made a disastrous appearance.
