USA 2 - 1 Bénin

A scorching day at Richfield Coliseum, where 26702 spectators were in place for today's match. John Michael Jamero was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Anselmo Moscariello and Ernesto Hernardo. It was a sunny day and the technical players could roll the ball around with ease. Those that had to chase after the ball found the weather less appealing, it especially stymied the game of Powerful and Quick players. They fielded: Mastrangelo - Vanderford, Moreno, Mcduffie, Glover - Lipka, Herd, Dávila, Bradley - Endlein, Walker.

Starters: Olufade - Kouassi, Dossou, Possy - Avougnassou, Dayori, Lakoussan, Videhouenou - Kpatinde, Daou, Ouro Doni.

U-20 USA started the game in a 4-4-2 formation, whereas U-20 Bénin lined up in a 3-4-3 formation. 22 minutes in, U-20 USA's Hunter Vanderford received a yellow card for going into a challenge studs first. After 25 minutes, the visitors nearly went up a goal, but Agbeyome Lakoussan's free kick hit the crossbar. 27 minutes in, U-20 USA appeared unsure on how to play and their organisation was only solid. 29 minutes into the game, U-20 USA had difficulty finding their positions and their organisation dropped to inadequate. Setondji Videhouenou managed to make an excellent pass from the wing, but Agbeyome Lakoussan was not as skillful and couldn't finish it off. 35 minutes into the game, Ugoji Avougnassou almost gave the visitors the lead, as he clipped a delicate lob over the keeper, but the ball glanced harmlessly off the crossbar. U-20 Bénin's Romuald Kouassi was shown a yellow card for standing over the ball and blocking an opponent's quick free kick after 40 minutes. 41 minutes into the game, U-20 USA seemed a little tentative in their play as their organization fell to weak. 0 - 1 was the score with 42 minutes played, after Emmanuel Dayori cut through the central defence and chipped home a goal for U-20 Bénin. 0 - 1 was the halftime score. U-20 Bénin had most of the ball, with 73 percent of possession.

During the break, U-20 USA's coach went through the team's tactics yet again, getting them up to solid organisation. In an effort to secure the lead, U-20 Bénin changed their tactic after 46 minutes. U-20 USA's Willie Lipka was dominating his wing and kept sending fine balls into the opposition's box - Giovanni Bradley managed to volley one of them into the net to make it 1 - 1 after 51 minutes. Emmanuel Dayori had a good try after 52 minutes, coming in on a fine move from the left, but the ball went wide. After 60 minutes, there was a bit of a mixup on the field as U-20 USA found themselves out of position and their organisation level dropped to passable. 78 minutes into the game, U-20 USA seemed to suffer a certain amount of confusion and they fell to a weak level of organisation. The head of Hendrik Endlein connected with a corner kick after 79 minutes, and the ball ended up with Yaakov Herd of U-20 USA who blasted the ball into the net, making the score 2 - 1. With 80 minutes played, the visitors could have drawn level after Emmanuel Ouro Doni came through the middle, but his shot went wide. Yaakov Herd left the field with a smile on his face as he was substituted 85 minutes into the game, as his team was in the lead. Ahmed Bedier was the replacement. The coach of U-20 USA was happy with the game so far, but still wanted to change the line up. After 85 minutes, Melchor Gaspar came on for Giovanni Bradley. Willie Lipka wanted to play on, but the U-20 USA coach had other ideas, and he was replaced 85 minutes into the game by Cody Patterson. Still ahead in the game after 86 minutes, U-20 USA made some tactical adjustments. Eddie Moreno and Paul Mastrangelo swapped positions. As Eddie Moreno exited the field, Paul Mastrangelo volunteered to be the new set pieces taker. The bench was restless, and with 86 minutes passed U-20 Bénin's coach gave Germain Ahoueya the opportunity the player had been hoping for. Emmanuel Dayori reluctantly left the field. As the match clock hit 87 minutes, U-20 USA regrouped to try and keep their initiative in the game. Eddie Moreno high-fived Sammy Mcduffie as they swapped positions on the team. With 87 minutes played, the U-20 Bénin coach decided a substitution may help turn the game around. Samari Bio Djara came on, Oguejiofor Olufade had to leave the fray. While defending the U-20 USA lead, Hunter Vanderford got a new role. 88 minutes in the game, his coach ordered him to change positions with Sammy Mcduffie. After 88 minutes, U-20 Bénin switched Romuald Kouassi with Adrien Djossou, hoping for a quick impact on the pitch. After 89 minutes, U-20 USA felt secure enough to make a tactical change. Larry Glover and Hunter Vanderford assumed each others positions on the field. The players were tired, but when the referee announced that there would be 1 minute of added time they, nonetheless, welcomed the extra opportunity to make an impact. The match ends 2 - 1. U-20 Bénin claimed to have seen most of the ball, and the statistics agreed with them - possession being 76 percent.

Paul Mastrangelo performed admirably for U-20 USA. Anastasio Dávila on the other hand, had a terrible day. Most important U-20 Bénin player was Ugoji Avougnassou. Samari Bio Djara was a disappointment, however.
