Appleton 4 - 1 dream

Overcast weather free of rain made for a crowd turnout of 5246 at FC Appleton United Arena today. Víctor Julio Taboada was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Fredrik Bernhardsson and Márió Kaplár. They fielded: Lima - Bussell-Smith, Barger, Stevenson, Li - O'Rourke, Lancaster, Spivey, Wright-Fields - O'Connor, Amadeo.

The following players had been chosen: Bingaman - Samson, Purvis, Kauper, Cabrera - Bell, Goodman, Goldsmith, Stenzel - Bronson, Tolleson.

As the teams spread out over the pitch, it became clear that they would both be using a 4-4-2 formation today. After several obvious shirt pulling incidents, Martin Spivey got himself booked. The manager of Appleton was not happy. As Milan Tolleson had, completely unprovoked, swept the legs out from under an opponent in front of a linesman, the referee gave the dream player a red card without batting an eyelid. Marty Lancaster was unable to continue, following a slight injury to his right knee after 29 minutes. The replacement for the injured player was Wiley Boyd. As the captain was no longer on the pitch, John Bussell-Smith took over the role of being the Appleton captain. Many thought Teryl Wright-Fields ought to have been awarded a penalty 40 minutes into the game, as he went down trying to dribble around Lionel Bingaman after a determined run through the middle. Laurence Bronson sailed high above the opponents as he headed in a corner kick from Jamie Bell after 42 minutes of play, making the score 0 - 1. Halftime score was 0 - 1. Appleton claimed to have seen most of the ball, and the statistics agreed with them - possession being 61 percent.

After 50 minutes, Wiley Boyd made a dash down the middle past the away team's defenders to score the goal that made it 1 - 1. A questionable penalty 52 minutes in gave the home side the lead, 2 - 1. The visitors' goalie didn't stand a chance as Martin Spivey knocked the ball home. Martin Spivey struck a 30 metre free kick home 72 minutes into the match. 3 - 1 for the home team. With 79 minutes played, Appleton put themselves up 4 - 1 when the visiting defenders lost the ball to Orville O'Connor, who came up from the left and proceeded to coolly round the keeper and knock the ball home. The players were tired, but when the referee announced that there would be 1 minute of added time they, nonetheless, welcomed the extra opportunity to make an impact. The match ends 4 - 1. Appleton had most of the ball, with 62 percent of possession.

Appleton's best player was Álvaro Amadeo. Howell Lima on the other hand, had a terrible day. Most important dream player was Kristopher Stenzel. Lionel Bingaman turned in a dismal performance, however.
