Marbach 4 - 1 RSG

A scorching day at Haifischbecken Marbach, where 2444 spectators were in place for today's match. was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Arto Koivisto and Frank Werner. The match took place on neutral ground. Marbach tactics involved an interesting 4-5-1 combination. Starters: Deyer - Friedenseich, Bittinger, Runyan, Schricker - Galmiche, Maillard, Wildisen, Wachmann, Kubalek - Willisegger.

A 4-5-1 alignment was the formation of choice for RSG. The following players had been chosen: Buchelsdorf - Ermolenko, Lehmann, Matzner, Korth - Spitzke, Zangerl, Zill, Hauer, Bockholdt - Löben.

Counter-attacking seemed to be the preferred strategy of Marbach, taking advantage of their magnificent level with that tactic. RSG used their weak skill at pressing to cut off the attack angles of their opponents all over the field. With 18 minutes played Edy Willisegger almost put the home team one ahead on a cross coming in from the right, but the shot went just wide. RSG mounted an inspired counterattack down the right wing after 19 minutes, but Heinrich Zill was unable to convert from short range. Marbach made a bid to take the lead as a ball coming in on the right hand side left Marius Wachmann completely alone with keeper Klausdieter Buchelsdorf, who made a spectacular block. The guests almost went up by a goal after 39 minutes when Jakob Johannes Löben came through and shot from the right. The ball bounced harmlessly off the post, though. Several players seemed a little dazed by the warm weather, and were repeatedly tricked by the clever and agile Alex Wildisen. A well placed corner kick from Bob Schricker was followed by Cyril Bittinger's hard but accurate header. The well executed routine resulted in a goal for Marbach, the score now 1 - 0. Marbach increased the lead as Edy Willisegger struck to make the score 2 - 0 after an attack from the left left him unmarked in front of the keeper. It was 2 - 0 at the break. Possession in this half belonged to Marbach, who controlled the ball 79 percent of the time.

Although the whole team were struggling to impress, RSG's Markus Korth was singled out as being the problem as he was called off the pitch after 50 minutes. Reiner Benesch was given a chance to change things around. As Markus Korth exited the field, Jakob Johannes Löben volunteered to be the new set pieces taker. The Marbach free kick 53 minutes into the match seemed wasted, as the shot was both short and off target. But was this actually a plan? The ball landed at the feet of Alex Wildisen, who was completely unmarked in the box. That's 3 - 0! Morale on the visitors' bench was greatly improved when their player Hans-Joachim Spitzke reduced the lead to make it 3 - 1 after 54 minutes, following a pass from the right. Given a free kick close to the byline, Marbach tried a move that loyal fans may recognise from training. A pass to the side pulled the defence out of position which let Edy Willisegger slip through on goal. He didn't have to break his stride, and slipped the ball past the keeper to make it 4 - 1, 67 minutes into the game. Bob Schricker almost put Marbach ahead another goal when he curled a free kick over the defensive wall and almost into the net, but the visitors' keeper got there just in time to knock it wide. Marbach claimed to have seen most of the ball, and the statistics agreed with them - possession being 80 percent.

Most important Marbach player was Sepp Deyer. Edy Willisegger turned in a dismal performance, however. Klausdieter Buchelsdorf performed admirably for RSG. However, Heinrich Zill made a disastrous appearance. The match ends 4 - 1.
