Super Eagles - Review 2013

2013 is nearly over... The Nigerian football team, the Super Eagles, did a great job. But maybe even more surprising was the work of the HT Super Eagles. Here we want to savour these historical moments and share them with the rest of the world!

Dear all,

This is Goriola reporting from Lasgide (=Lagos), the largest city in Africa. Right now I am in Surulere in front of the Lagos National stadium, the former home base of our Super Eagles.

This report presents significant achievements by our Super Eagles in 2013, even if this year is not fully over yet. To put to record we can already declare that 2013 was for sure no go slow for the Super Eagles! They have been the key story over the year that was and have provided us with the moments and memories that we will all, surely, recount to our grandchildren one day.

A small review on the rl Super Eagles will tell us that Nigeria won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2013 for the third time in history. Furthermore we won the Under-17 Fifa World Cup. In the FIFA Confederations Cup we participated in the Group stage and recently we qualified for the FIFA World Cup 2014 in Brazil. The Super Eagles proved to be pure class in 2013.

We have young players like Kelechi "Nacho" Iheanacho with magical touches on the ball, a shining hero to come. Ogenyi "Master Propeller" Onazi was the missing link for the Super Eagles and turned into a true mainstayer. Victor Moses is a big one... Emmanuel Emenike, our goal scoring machine, it working hard to keep doing it in big games. Influetional midfielder John Mikel Obi is a delight to watch. Vincent Enyeama is in fine fettle. Godfrey Oboabona, also nicknamed "Commiserations, Didier Drogba and Mario Balotelli" turned into a national hero this year. Who is your favourite player? Feel free to comment in the end. For me the best player is... Stephen Keshi’s glorious collective!

After having highlighted these achievements in 2013, it is obvious that Nigerian football is on the ascendency and for sure we have left the back seat and returned to be the true giant of African football!

Now it is time to take a look at our HT Super Eagles... Here we can say: Nigerian user numbers (currently 488 active teams) are lower that a lot of other countries. But we have a great community and strong managers here, therefore actual results on the field depend not so much only on the player skills but much more on what the team is able to put into practice, combining individual strengths and working together as a team to achieve the goals we have. We must work like a glorious collective. And for that we need a coach with a lot of skills. Probably the most important skill for the coach is that he is able to talk the talk so he can walk the walk ;-)

Our U20-team (with myself as coach) showed a great performance this year by qualifying to Round II in the U-20 World Cup XIX and even winning against Romania there. Qualification was tough though, Guatemala, Belarus and Northern Ireland had battled us heavily. But thanks to our lucky home win over Germany (422702716), we reached the safe 2nd spot with 3 points in advance and were able to qualify for the first time in U20 history. A historical achievement, as U20 teams have huge skill gaps. So the U20 Young Super Eagles had a great 2013.

But the NT topped the U20... The HT Super Eagles even qualifed to round III in the World Cup XX. In the group stage Nigeria was able to win against the US-boys as well as Hungary, a silver and double bronze medailist. In round II we crushed Italy (440796042) and finished in front of Romania, just as Hungary a silver and double bronze medailist. In round III we defeated Slovenija and missed round 4 only by one spot, but weakend Italy and Greece strongly - they were not able to qualify for the semi-finals. What a performance from our side and a big thanks to our head coach oga Svizzero (309240)!

No eyebrows raised, we are all utterly proud! And we are ready for a glorious 2014.

Merry Christmas to all and a happy and prosperous 2013. (http://www.modernghana.com/movie/21354/3/a-team-nigerian-squad-releases-song-for-christmas-.html)
