Chamois 1 - 2 Cognac

Due to an all-day shower, 1462 paying spectators got to see the game on a field-turned-swamp at Chamois Nantais Arena. Čestmír Šlajchrt was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Ruben Buassa and Lluís Quintana. Lineup: Durand - Pereyra, Lavaud - Viguera, Castagna, Joensen, Guiraud, Cornut - Poncet, Tachau, Flores.

They fielded: Bernard - Hutek, Puşcaşu, Villalobos, van Geuns - Rebut, Stounberg, Wrege, Eboli, Schlesien - Denner.

Chamois Nantais fielded a 2-5-3 lineup. For Cognac, the formation of choice was a 4-5-1. Many fans are yawning as Cognac appears to be more enamored of using their formidable pressing skills to smother the opponents' attacks rather than create attacks of their own. But all will be forgiven if it achieves a good result. The muddy field made the game a gritty affair, which seemed to suit Ionuţ Puşcaşu just fine. Cognac's ability to press all over the field paid off frequently. With 36 minutes of the match played, a comedy of errors by the home side gave the visitors a chance at the lead, but Alex Schlesien, after dashing down on goal from the left and finding himself with only the keeper to beat, sliced his shot horribly wide. A mistake by the home side's central defense after 40 minutes allowed Johnny Rebut to score for Cognac. The visitors have the lead, 0 - 1. Cognac pressed their opponents, causing the game to be a bit of a deadlock at times. With 43 minutes played, Chamois's Thomas Cornut received a yellow card for challenging a play with his cleats first. 0 - 1 was the halftime score. Neither team had an advantage in possession this half.

With a shot lofted in from just outside the penalty area 52 minutes in, Thomas Cornut of Chamois evened the score to 1 - 1. After 60 minutes, the Chamois coach made a sign to Jose Esteban Viguera, who soon changed positions with Thais Joensen. With the match clock at 61 minutes, Chamois modified their style of play a little bit. 61 minutes into the match, the referee signaled for a Chamois substitution. Clément Groult came on for Thais Joensen. With the clock showing 65 minutes, the fourth official held up the substitution board. Salvatore Eboli looked to see that it was his number in red, so he made his way over to the sideline and swapped out for Devlet Çıtak, though he would have liked to continue. Jose Esteban Viguera might as well have been wearing Pilgrim shoes for all the traction he could get on the waterlogged field - his trademark technique was nowhere in sight today. As the 70 minute mark approached, the Cognac manager decided it was time for a substitution. Juan Manuel Villalobos reluctantly made way for Ramon de Gibert. With 71 minutes played, the Cognac manager called Maxim van Geuns over to the sideline and told him to switch places with Ramon de Gibert. At this time in the match, Cognac were using their skill at pressing to successfully stifle the game. After 80 minutes, the Cognac coach wanted to see a new face on the field, waving Alex Denner off. Roman Wołodziak took his place. A swat on the tuchus is all it took to keep Cognac's Ramon de Gibert in the match after injuring his achilles tendon. The ball is in play and we're underway again after 83 minutes have been played. As neither team had managed to win, 30 minutes of extra time was called. The Count appeared on the jumbotron and announced that Chamois had 51...51 percent possession. AH AH AH!

Chamois were very close to putting themselves one up with 95 minutes gone as Gwennaël Flores got through on the left, but a lapse in concentration sent the ball wide. The referee showed Cognac's Amadeusz Hutek the yellow card after a particularly nasty challenge. Cognac's Silas Stounberg made a magnificent block to avoid a goal. Sadly for him, he's not the goalie and he had to use his face for the heroic effort. It left him bleeding from the nose and also with a certain concussion. To add insult to injury, there were no more available substitutions! Silas Stounberg was coming off, and had taken his last free kick for the day. That meant Johnny Rebut got the chance to showcase his dead ball skills. This was a good period for the visitors, with several opportunities to take the lead, particularly when Ionuţ Puşcaşu slipped through the left defense to come up alone against Jean-Louis Durand, but the home side's keeper showed his lightning-fast reflexes. Roman Wołodziak will have Excedrin Headache number 5 after heading home the hard corner kick from Johnny Rebut after 112 minutes of play. I'm sure that making the score 1 - 2 will assuage him a bit, though. The match ends 1 - 2. Most important Chamois player was Thomas Cornut. Even six year old fans were wincing at the poor play by Paul-Émile Poncet today. The most outstanding Cognac player was without a doubt Roman Wołodziak. Speaking of stinking up the place, Amadeusz Hutek sure smelled like the bottom of Batman's shoe after a night of crimefighting in Gotham.
