MathFC 1 - 6 Pewsum

2729 spectators had come to Sxoleio this cloudy day. Lazzaro Pazzaglia was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Gabriel Rudawski and Dumitru Curtuiuş. The following players took the field: Paschalidis - Agrafiotis, Zouganelis, Fatsoulidis - Boată, Chatziefstratiou, Tomé Viniegra, Gatas, Recki - Estanga, Karapanos.

Lineup: Amieiro - Schofield, Henneghan, Richards - Sanders, Stoneking, Hassab El Naby, Truett, Siegel - Sairitupac, Kucherenko.

The teams stopped and stared at each other - it was like they were looking in a mirror, since they both lined up in a 3-5-2 formation. Today, MathFC's strategy involved concentrating on the flanks for their attacks, taking advantage of their excellent ability. 0 - 1 was the score after 7 minutes, when Pewsum's Corey Stoneking cut through the central defense and pounded one in. MathFC nearly produced a goal as Nikolaos Zouganelis set up Claudiu Boată for a strike from a seemingly impossible angle. He was unprepared though, and put the shot wide. After 27 minutes, following yet another great corner, Themistoklis Fatsoulidis knocked the ball to Nikolaos Zouganelis but it was just too high and the shot came off his shin. After 31 minutes of game time, Naguib Hassab El Naby had an excellent opportunity to add to the visitors' lead, hitting a cross from the right with a half volley, but Stelios Paschalidis was in the right place and tipped the ball to a corner. After 33 minutes, Claudiu Boată suffered a slight injury to his left calf muscle. However, it was not enough to stop him from continuing the game. That ball had all kinds of swerve! The home keeper was rooted in place 34 minutes into the match as James Richards's unstoppable free kick whizzed by him, making the scoreline even worse for his fans. 0 - 2. An indecisive keeper looked on as a free kick by Pewsum's James Richards put the visitors up 0 - 3 after 36 minutes. Pewsum increased the lead to 0 - 4 as James Richards scored from the penalty spot, putting the ball in the top left corner. One, two, three goals! That completed a hattrick for James Richards. AH! AH! AH! Halftime score was 0 - 4. Looks like Nate Silver was right again - his prediction that Pewsum would have 56 percent possession in this half was spot on!

The away team's Nikolay Kucherenko took advantage of a mistake on the home side's right after 65 minutes increasing Pewsum's lead to 0 - 5. MathFC supporters found their voice 66 minutes in as good work down the right got the ball to Manolis Karapanos who reduced the visitors' lead to 1 - 5. Everyone had expected a shot from the free kick 69 minutes into the game, but Pewsum sent the ball sideways instead, giving Bradley Truett a clear look at goal with no wall in his way. He sent it through the keeper's legs for 1 - 6! Pewsum will have to work out a different routine for indirect free kicks. Though it looked well-rehearsed, their play after 79 minutes was easily anticipated by the opposition and the attackers simply had nowhere to go. The fourth official announced that there would be 2 minutes of stoppage time, giving fans a slim hope that their team could get one more attack in before this was all over. The match ends 1 - 6. The Count appeared on the jumbotron and announced that Pewsum had 58...58 percent possession. AH AH AH!

MathFC's top performer was clearly Víctor Tomé Viniegra. I can't remember Stelios Paschalidis ever having a worse night than he just had. Most important Pewsum player was Eduardo Sairitupac. Even six year old fans were wincing at the poor play by Gaylord Schofield today.
