Valcon 4 - 1 Merlo

1199 spectators arrived at Fortin Julian Arauz, where weather conditions were pretty good for soccer. Donato Mastrota was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Roger Ulfbratt and Manos Kallitzakis. The following players had been selected: Tkebuchava - Cărăuleanu, Torrecillas, Olchawski, Sălăvăstru - Wästerström, Chilavert, Rauf, Pitacho - Rosina, Narbardi.

Lineup: Lungescu - Leonian, Moris, Troisi - Morales, Viegas, Advalia, Biaggio, Bochini - Fuente Alba, Peralta.

It was to be a contest between two different football philosophies, since the home team started the game with a 4-4-2 formation while the visitors instead opted for a 3-5-2. It was an obvious ambition of Valcon to play a wide game with their divine (+4) ability to attack down the wings. Merlo saw most attack opportunities on the wings by using their divine (+2) ability to push the attack in the right direction. With 3 minutes played Enrico Rosina almost put the home team one ahead on a cross coming in from the right, but the shot went just wide. With 9 minutes played, Merlo's Diego Javier Morales received a yellow card for challenging a play with his cleats first. Attacking on the wings was the theme of the day for Merlo, and they were successfully passing the ball outside from the middle. After 26 minutes, Merlo put themselves up 0 - 1, as José Javier Fuente Alba finished off a play from the left with a real rocket. It was obvious that Valcon had instructions to attack on the wings instead of in the middle. The crowd was on its feet at the 30 minute mark, as Valcon's Gogor Narbardi found himself all alone in front of the goal after a dash up the left side. He calmly put away the 1 - 1 equalizer. Players in Valcon heard their coach's words ringing in their ears and steered their central attacks to the wings instead. Oh, it's a stupendous shot on goal! A Caravaggio! A Michaelangelo! A Venus on the Half Shell! 33 minutes into the match and Bento Pitacho has created art for the ages for Valcon, putting them ahead 2 - 1. I'm weeping. I can't stop my eyes. The teams went for the halftime break at 2 - 1. Valcon set the tempo, maintaining 57 percent of possession.

Enrico Rosina increased Valcon's lead to 3 - 1, connecting with a hooked ball from the right. The away fans are claiming handball, to no avail. Jonas Wästerström gave Valcon supporters even more to cheer about when he increased the lead to 4 - 1 after 51 minutes, following a good exchange of passes on the right that the away team failed to deal with. Valcon's Cristian Cărăuleanu was shown a yellow card after 55 minutes for slicing down an opponent. Valcon's Gonzalo Chilavert had an excellent opportunity 57 minutes in, shooting after bringing down a ball from the right, but he missed the goal by miles! With 58 minutes gone, a long pass from the defense of Merlo resulted in a counter-attack that set Hernán Biaggio free through the middle, but the keeper made a spectacular diving save. After a play down the right 62 minutes into the match, Valcon's David Torrecillas unleashed a ferocious shot that smashed into the roof of the net - after going over the crossbar. It was announced by the fourth official that he estimated stoppage time to be around 2 minutes. This meant there could still be an extra attack or two left in the match! The match ends 4 - 1. Valcon did a good job holding on to the ball, with 58 percent of possession. We'll be back after these interminable commercial messages.

Valcon's best player was Enrico Rosina. Good thing Cristian Cărăuleanu isn't a horse, because he'd surely be sent to the glue factory after that performance. José Javier Fuente Alba performed admirably for Merlo. You can tell it was nickel beer night yesterday at the local bar because Pedro Clemente Leonian seemed to stumble all over the pitch.
