Mtatsminda 2 - 0 Oni

The crowd of 43334 turning up at Mtatsminda Arena today were greeted with some nasty showers of rain. Tjibbe van de Wielen was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Shadi Qassem Awad and Sanusi Kabango. The rain was pouring down, it was the kind of weather favoured by strong players who stick to simple football. For players possessing of speed or technical skills, the day really was as grim as for everyone else. The following players had been selected: Düzen - Dashev, Lee, Garufa, Luciano - Ahlskär, Ergönül, Guillot, Wojniusz, Hagen - Cheng.

They fielded: Qocharyan - Njegić, Nebiridze, Siordia, Bezuashvili - Razzini, Phailodze, Jokvadze, Tandashvili - Gegidze, Alasania.

F.C. Mtatsminda started the game in a 4-5-1 formation, whereas FC Oni lined up in a 4-4-2. It was obvious, dreadfully boring, and yet tantalizingly effective, to see Oni using their inadequate pressing skills as their primary tactic. 13 minutes into the game, Mtatsminda seemed to suffer a certain amount of confusion and they fell to a passable level of organization. Many thought Ange Guillot ought to have been awarded a penalty 15 minutes into the match, as he went down trying to beat Vardkes Qocharyan after an attack through the middle gave him the one-on-one opportunity. Mtatsminda were very close to putting themselves one up with 17 minutes gone as Romeo Luciano got through on the left, but a lapse in concentration sent the ball wide. The game had been going for 30 minutes when Jovert Cheng came in on the right, feinted, then sped past the off-balance defender to put away the 1 - 0 goal, giving Mtatsminda the lead. Krzysztof Wojniusz had a fantastic opportunity to put Mtatsminda up another goal 33 minutes into the match, but he fired just over the crossbar. Mtatsminda's Robert Hagen was shown a yellow card for standing over the ball and blocking an opponent's quick free kick after 35 minutes. After 37 minutes, a couple of quick and successful challenges followed by a shot from just outside the penalty area by Chul-Min Lee might have resulted in another goal for Mtatsminda. However, Vardkes Qocharyan made a spectacular save. After more pushing and shoving than a pack of helicopter moms trying to get the last appointment for their snowflakes to see the Easter Bunny, Mtatsminda's Jovert Cheng finally got himself booked for a foul. Kartlos Siordia went down after twisting his right ankle in minute 38, but was able to continue the match nonetheless. The teams went for the halftime break at 1 - 0. Looks like Nate Silver was right again - his prediction that Mtatsminda would have 61 percent possession in this half was spot on!

A review of the gameplan helped Mtatsminda get back to a solid organization to start the second half. 63 minutes into the game, Mtatsminda had difficulty finding their positions and their organization dropped to weak. Krum Dashev was in no condition to play on. He left the field limping after 75 minutes, with his right thigh bandaged. Kvarkvare Tvalabeishvili had already been warming up, and came on for Krum Dashev. Mtatsminda added another goal to their lead as Kvarkvare Tvalabeishvili struck home for 2 - 0 after an attack from the left set him up unmarked in front of the keeper. It was announced by the fourth official that he estimated stoppage time to be around 2 minutes. This meant there could still be an extra attack or two left in the match! The match ends 2 - 0. Mtatsminda set the tempo, maintaining 59 percent of possession.

Mtatsminda's best player was Romeo Luciano. Good thing Kvarkvare Tvalabeishvili isn't a horse, because he'd surely be sent to the glue factory after that performance. Oni's top performer was clearly Giga Phailodze. I can't remember Silibistro Nebiridze ever having a worse night than he just had.
