Iran 0 - 0 Suriname

Dark skies made the crowd of 124221 at kheronaro a little nervous, but the rain held off. Giovanni D'Annibale was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Juris Zeldmans and Claudiu Preda. Lineup: Babak - Modir Rousta, Ejtehad, Amir Teymouri - Jasemi, Nobakhti, Barezi, Abdi, Hamedan - Movahednia, Hamidi.

The following players took the field: Mashita - Glorie, Puri, Beudeker, Piroe, Kartoredjo - Bunuaji, van Dijk, van der Kooye - Royer, Shirur.

U-20 Iran fielded a 3-5-2 lineup. For U-20 Suriname, the formation of choice was a 5-3-2. A world class level of counter-attacking seemed to be the preferred strategy of U-20 Suriname. Foroud Abdi dispatched a majestic long shot 17 minutes in, but missed the goal by a few yards. After 18 minutes U-20 Suriname tried to use their counter-attacking skills. Unfortunately, Jermaine Beudeker's shot sailed wide after his break down the right. With 32 minutes played, U-20 Suriname's Winston Kartoredjo received a yellow card for challenging a play with his cleats first. After suffering a nasty injury to his right calf muscle, Hamzeh Amir Teymouri left the field in tears. The unfortunate accident happened 32 minutes into the match. This gave Siamand Ghasemian a chance to take to the field instead. The teams went for the halftime break at 0 - 0. The Count appeared on the jumbotron and announced that U-20 Iran had 77...77 percent possession. AH AH AH!

With the match clock at 55 minutes, U-20 Iran modified their style of play a little bit. As the 56 minute mark approached, the U-20 Iran manager decided it was time for a substitution. Yasan Hamedan reluctantly made way for Mohammad Jafartabar. 56 minutes into the match, the U-20 Iran manager wanted to try a new tactic, and the players loyally obliged. Winston Kartoredjo knew he was in trouble after hacking down an opponent. Despite his pleading with the referee, the U-20 Suriname player was shown a second yellow card and dismissed from the game. As U-20 Suriname's captain went off, he handed the armband to Ryan Glorie. 65 minutes into the game, U-20 Suriname wanted to bring some new energy to their game. Ricardo van Dijk gave Mitchell Dhauri a quick hug as he left the field. With 67 minutes gone, a long pass from the defense of U-20 Suriname resulted in a counter-attack that set Gerold van der Kooye free through the middle, but the keeper made a spectacular diving save. The players were tired, but when the referee announced that there would be 1 minutes of added time, they welcomed the extra opportunity to make an impact. Feeling like a boy about to meet his girlfriend's father for the first time, the inexperienced U-20 Suriname struggled to maintain their level of play after 89 minutes. The match ends 0 - 0. Looks like Nate Silver was right again - his prediction that U-20 Iran would have 83 percent possession in this half was spot on!

Most important U-20 Iran player was Pendar Hamidi. I can't remember Siamand Ghasemian ever having a worse night than he just had. U-20 Suriname's top performer was clearly Sachiv Shirur. Even six year old fans were wincing at the poor play by Mitchell Dhauri today.
