Rayo 0 - 1 Sanchez

40417 fans turned up at Benedicto "Santo" Estévez, and despite threatening clouds, no rain came. Ferdinand Kovanda was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Gordon O'Loughlin and Yann Gauthier. Lineup: Billoda - Mândrilă, Ozores, Gia, Gacias, Ferriol - Salas, Alkazubi, Arizmendi López, Oulkhir, Specchio -.

The following players had been selected: Viejo - Antón, Cama, Guerra - Romero, Espalza, Gómez de Lamadrid, Kútev, Carrillo - Ibabe, Afrim.

It was to be a contest between two different football philosophies, since the home team started the game with a 5-5-0 formation while the visitors instead opted for a 3-5-2. With the clock showing 37 minutes played, a great pass from the defensive line of Rayo resulted in a counter-attack that was smoothly brought under control by Dani Ozores in the center of the opposition's penalty area, but his finish went high. Ibar Ibabe came close to putting the visiting team one up 42 minutes into the match, following a solo raid down the middle, but Laureano 'Galáctico' Billoda managed to tip the ball over. Laureano 'Galáctico' Billoda looked great 43 minutes in after stopping a shot by the visitors' Marcos Antón. It was 0 - 0 at the break. Looks like Nate Silver was right again - his prediction that Sanchez would have 66 percent possession in this half was spot on!

With 67 minutes played, seemingly due to lack of experience, Marcos Antón needlessly tripped an opponent just outside the penalty area, but the free kick that followed didn't succeed. After several obvious shirt pulling incidents, Rayo's Pedro Salas got himself booked. With 78 minutes played, Sanchez's Luis Romero received a yellow card for challenging a play with his cleats first. Feeling like a boy about to meet his girlfriend's father for the first time, the inexperienced Rayo struggled to maintain their level of play after 79 minutes. As neither team had managed to win, 30 minutes of extra time was called. Sanchez set the tempo, maintaining 68 percent of possession.

After 91 minutes, the Sanchez coach wanted to see a new face on the field, waving Marcos Antón off. Gonzalo Guerradell took his place. As the 91 minute mark approached, the Sanchez manager decided it was time for a substitution. Laro Carrillo reluctantly made way for Joan Manel Montalvà. With Laro Carrillo no longer on the field, Matei Afrim was the new set pieces taker. The Sanchez coach adjusted their lineup after 91 minutes. Ibar Ibabe and William Guerra assumed each other's positions. A review of the gameplan helped Rayo get back to a solid organization to start the second half. Down the middle came Dimitar 'Comandante' Kútev, making a fantastic play that nearly saw Sanchez take the lead after 92 minutes, but Laureano 'Galáctico' Billoda preserved the tie. Sanchez's Ibar Ibabe gave the visitors a 0 - 1 lead after 99 minutes with a superb strike from the right. 101 minutes into the match, Pedro Gómez de Lamadrid came through the middle and almost added to his team's lead, but the shot went wide. The match ends 0 - 1. The most outstanding Rayo player was without a doubt Laureano 'Galáctico' Billoda. Even six year old fans were wincing at the poor play by Pedro Salas today. Sanchez's best player was Matei Afrim. You can tell it was nickel beer night yesterday at the local bar because Joan Manel Montalvà seemed to stumble all over the pitch.
