The manager never sleeps

I went to bed around 2:30am. My team would be playing the friendly now. Should I watch it live? Noo! I'll get the run down tomorrow. But I can't sleep!

Hmm, I should have played in Italy. Anyway, I deserve a break after thrashing region rival "speeders fc" 9-0. My phone rings and I answer it. It's one of my assistants. I'm winning 2-0 but my supernatural forward has injured for 3weeks! I hop out of bed, get dressed and drive to the office.

As I arrived at the office many thoughts rushed through my head. I should have rested him!! I can see some of those greedy sponsors saying "There goes N240million worth of striking power for 3 weeks". I'm sure they watched it live. They hardly miss a game. They spend N20,000 watching a single game, not to mention the champaigne and caviar and I should be the one to stop spending...

Doctors had diagnosed Victor Rahm's injury to be healed after 3 weeks 5 days. I didn't have that much time. We play league rivals ajax on Sunday and I need every arsenal I can get. I arrange a meeting with the transfer agents:

"Listen up, boys. I want a striker.... not just any striker but a guy within 25 and 29 years" I said "Good in the air, has at least a worldclass instinct for scoring goals, probably good with set pieces, and a good distributor of the ball. Come on boys, scramble! We've got Friday and Saturday to find what we need".

After Friday I started to lose faith in my transfer team. I had not shaved or slept since Wednesday night. If there was one thing I have learnt in this beautiful game of soccer and wits, it's that finding the perfect player was never a problem. They are there. It is the ability of the manager to let him go that matters.

I got a call from my transfer team. "We've got a player, boss" I was told "You won't believe it... He's a mythical finisher. But he's worth N450million."

I thought for a while, mythical finishing. Thats everything I need! "Bid! bid!! bid!!!".

At once some manager guy with a big purse decided to enter the bid war with us. In 10 minutes the price had gone up to over N600million. I could see the sponsors having a heart attack! I could also see the owner of the player laughing to the banking hall! The bid rival later gave up at N720million. Why all the fuss? The player was 25 years old.

We had him flown in. Just in time for the match. We won it 3-1.

After the match and a little bit of champagne, I drove home, shaved, and lay down to sleep. I heard my ex wife telling me "even you know that a manager never sleeps".

Self denial is one thing but I was starting to believe her. As I closed my eyes for the first time in 3days to drift away, MY PHONE RANG!
